Inspiration

Virtual reality should let people shape a world directly with their hands, not merely replicate flat-screen controls. LUMEN explores that idea through a calm, self-contained puzzle experience.

What it does

LUMEN is a seated-friendly spatial puzzle prototype in which players rotate luminous prisms to connect a source of light with a dormant beacon. Five progressively longer puzzles use immediate visual feedback to teach the central mechanic. Completing a puzzle awakens its beacon and advances to the next miniature world.

How it was built

The project was created during the competition period using JavaScript, Three.js, WebGL, WebXR and Vite. The floating platform, crystals, beams, background stars and logic are all generated in source code. It does not depend on an AI API or media platform. Desktop users can drag prisms for convenient testing. The WebXR prototype tracks the index-finger and thumb tips to detect a pinch, select a nearby prism and rotate it with hand movement.

Hands-first interaction

On WebXR hand-tracking devices, the planned core interaction is pinch-to-grab near a prism and move horizontally to rotate. The prototype automatically advances in headset mode after each solved puzzle. Hardware verification and additional in-world reset/replay navigation are still pending.

What’s next

Complete end-to-end hands-only controls and onboarding, validate on Meta Quest, improve spatial audio, optical simulation, accessibility and performance, and publish a verified headset demonstration.

Development status: Prototype. The live deployment and headset validation have not yet been completed.
