Inspiration

I created Lumë because I work an office job and love listening to Lo-Fi music. Unfortunately my brain dislikes staying still. Sitting at a computer for 8+ hours is incredibly difficult to do for someone that has ADHD, so I use Lo-Fi Girl on YouTube. As amazing as that channel is, the same 8 second looped animation and a chat I can't understand makes my brain wander more than it should. Instead of focusing on work, focusing on the music, my brain is now focused elsewhere, making it more difficult to bring back.

What it does

I created Lumë to combat exactly that. Not just another Lo-Fi radio, Lumë offers real virtual fidget toys to stimulate the user's brain. The user would be able to listen to their same Lo-Fi tracks, still working at their pc with their phone beside them, but instead of their brain wandering, they instead can direct their focus to, as of now, 3 modes in Lumë. Orb mode has a reactive Orb that when dragged creates a tone that perfectly fits any Lo-fi song. Pulse mode is a familiar game everyone loves, asteroids fall from the top of the screen and the user can shoot the asteroids, gain power ups and improve their scores. Wisp mode is a fan favorite, in Wisp mode, users are able to "pop" fireflies and feel a haptic response. All three modes are autonomous when the user is not using the phone, instead of playing, the user can simply watch, and take over at any time, then let go and go back to being autonomous.

How we built it

I built Lumë as a solo Dev with some help from Claude AI. Majority of the code was me building in XCode as my first project with SwiftUI, Firebase, RevenueCat, etc. I created it so free users can still experience the Orb, in fact it's similar to Lo-Fi Girl on YouTube. Free users start with the Orb, 3 Free Colors, and the Music. RevenueCat powers three subscriptions: Orb Only (2.99), Everything Monthly (4.99) and Everything Yearly (49.99). Orb only unlocks favoriting music, as well as all colors, but does not unlock the game modes. Everything Monthly (4.99) and Everything Yearly (49.99) gives you full access to the entire app.

Challenges we ran into

The more difficult challenges I could not solve alone, I had Claude solve. For instance, building an audio engine was a task that was way beyond what I could do. I did attempt to do it myself, but I couldn't quite get it right, I ran into a lot of issues with it not playing, with duplicate IDs, just a lot I didn't understand yet. With the help Claude we not only got all that above working, but even more features!

Accomplishments that we're proud of

I suffer with depression and anxiety, so motivation is hard to come by. I am so genuinely proud of myself for just being able to follow through for the past two months and actually build a real world project. I am in awe that I was able to do this. This was a pipe dream before, the fact I can view it on the app store now is insanity to me. The past couple years have been hard for me. Here's to hoping the next few are much much better, and with Lumë out now, things are already feeling good. Thank you.

What we learned

I learned SO MUCH OMG! Apologies but wow, I am stunned by how much I thought I knew, but come to find out I didn't know anything haha. I learned how an audio engine works, I learned more Swift than I ever thought I would. One thing I really love, I really wanted to start making games, so with the light game modes introduced I feel like I learned enough to actually start making a dedicated game. This gave me enough insight to get started on something small. So big thanks to Lumë for forcing me in that direction.

What's next for Lumë

I am excited to find artists and replace all the current music in there now with real artists. I also want to get more holidays in there for that holiday mode. Something I know for sure is that Lumë is now my baby, so anything the app needs, I know I'm gonna try my hardest. THANK YOU!
