Inspiration
Our inspiration for building Lulu Teret came from a simple yet troubling reality — Ethiopian children have almost no access to high-quality local entertainment. There are virtually no dedicated TV channels, YouTube series, or streaming platforms that create educational and fun content for them in their own language.
My 9-year-old brother often tells me how bored he is after school. With few kids to play with, he turns to mobile phones — and inevitably, to unfiltered TikTok videos. Studies have shown how harmful such content can be to children. Lulu Teret was born out of the need to change this — to give Ethiopian kids a joyful, meaningful, and culturally relevant way to spend their screen time.
What it does
Lulu Teret is a mobile storybook app that brings fairy tales from around the world to Ethiopian children in beautifully translated Amharic. Each story comes with stunning illustrations and professional voice narration, creating an immersive reading and listening experience.
Our goal is simple: to make children smile, learn, and imagine — while giving parents peace of mind knowing their kids are consuming safe, educational, and wholesome content.
How we built it
We began by collecting public domain fairy tales from global story archives. Using AI-assisted translation, we carefully converted each story into Amharic while preserving its tone and meaning.
Next, we used generative AI tools to create vivid illustrations for each story, followed by a human review for artistic and cultural accuracy. We then collaborated with a professional Amharic voice artist to record narrations.
Finally, we built the mobile application using React Native and Firebase — focusing on speed, simplicity, and a delightful user experience.
Challenges we ran into
Our biggest challenge was maintaining linguistic, cultural, and artistic integrity.
AI translations often lost nuances of Ethiopian culture or children’s tone, so we conducted manual reviews for every story. Similarly, AI-generated illustrations sometimes misrepresented the context — requiring multiple human revisions to ensure they matched the story flow and cultural aesthetics.
Balancing AI efficiency with human sensitivity was the hardest — but most rewarding — part.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We’re proud that Ethiopian children finally have a platform made exclusively for them — rich in culture, color, and imagination.
Lulu Teret currently features 50 beautifully illustrated and narrated stories, giving kids a safe and joyful escape into the world of tales.
Our proudest moments come when a child listens, laughs, and learns — knowing they are engaging with stories created just for them.
What we learned
The biggest lesson we learned is that when building for children, content quality matters far more than technical complexity.
Our tech stack is intentionally simple — React Native with Firebase — but the real challenge was linguistic beauty, moral integrity, and fun. We learned to balance education, entertainment, and ethics, ensuring every story is engaging and safe for kids.
What's next for Lulu Teret
Our next mission is to make sure every parent in Ethiopia and the diaspora hears about Lulu Teret and shares it with their children.
We plan to launch a targeted social media campaign across Facebook, TikTok, and Telegram — reaching parents who value culturally rooted, safe, and educational content.
We’ve already submitted Lulu Teret to the Google Play Store and are currently awaiting approval from Google. Once it’s live, we’ll begin a marketing rollout to reach early users and gather real-world feedback.
In parallel, we aim to expand from 50 to over 200 stories, including Ethiopian folktales.
Our long-term vision is to make Lulu Teret the go-to digital home for Ethiopian children’s entertainment and education, preserving our storytelling heritage while inspiring a new generation of dreamers.
