Inspiration

  • Lucy’s Strange Encounter was born from the emotional reality many young adults face today: the weight of perfection, the silent pressure to excel, and the quiet loneliness that follows. The project grew from a desire to turn that inner emotional landscape into something visual. We were inspired by the power of fables to create something magical but profoundly insightful.

What it does

  • The short film follows Lucy, a young woman overwhelmed by perfectionism, who enters a surreal experience where her hidden emotional burdens take physical form. In this world, the fog unveils what she suppresses, leading her to confront her internal weight and decide what she must let go to move forward. It is both a visual metaphor and an emotional journey toward clarity, connection, and self-acceptance.

How we built it

We built the project using a hybrid process that combined:

  • Traditional scriptwriting and drawn storyboarding
  • AI-generated cinematic imagery and animation using a variety of GenAI tools
  • Carefully crafted voices using ElevenLabs
  • Iterative refinement focusing on rhythm, story, and beats through multiple screenings and intermediate viewings The fog, both as atmosphere and metaphor, guided the look, pacing, and transitions between emotional segments.

Challenges we ran into

  • Maintaining poetic ambiguity in the narrator’s voiceover
  • Avoiding the project to feel pretentious
  • Achieving a fluid tonal progression that feels escalating rather than divided. We established the goal of going from uplifting to melancholic to intense to melancholic again to grounded in reality, following a true human emotional rollercoaster.
  • Ensuring the metaphor remained visual and that the voiceover only adds to what we’re already seeing
  • Managing technical constraints of AI-generated shots while preserving coherence and continuity throughout the entire film.
  • Creating visual shots that, through simple prompting, were practically impossible to achieve. We had to edit extensively to get the exact shot and emotion we wanted, often requiring a mix of traditional tools over GenAI-generated content.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

  • Creating a world with a distinct magical and philosophical look.
  • Crafting a creature voiceover that feels ancient, mysterious, friendly, and intimate
  • Achieving a complex, cohesive emotional arc within a six-minute structure
  • Designing sound and visual transitions that support the plot and character's journey
  • Building a film that feels personal yet universal and accessible, where everyone can empathize with the hero's journey
  • The use of silence and long takes to transmit emotion
  • Using AI tools to serve the cinematic techniques we aimed to express, rather than showcasing the tools themselves.
  • Having being able to express a human emotional truth through a visual language.

What we learned

  • Less literal narration and more ambiguity often means greater emotional impact for the viewer
  • Silence can be more powerful than dialogue
  • Trust the audience and avoid over-explaining
  • Tone, rhythm, silence, and music are tools as important as plot; all must serve the narrative purpose
  • A character’s internal conflict can be externalized without losing subtlety

What's next for Lucy’s Strange Encounter

We plan to:

  • Expand the fog-world into a larger lore foundation
  • Build Lucy’s arc into a broader narrative exploring identity and transformation. In this broader narrative, the fog will have an even greater importance, exploring the planet’s backstory and answering the question “Why does the fog help the characters, and why is it what it is?”, while introducing a wider cast of characters who have also encountered creatures and been “changed.”
  • Think of a potential movie or series development
