Inspiration

A sister's prayer request for her counseling practice and Ryan's therapist wife who does EMDR therapy with her clients

What it does

Web-application that makes virtual EMDR therapy possible and gives counselors control over all visual and audio queues needed for therapy.

How we built it

React app with client-server architecture using web sockets

Challenges we ran into

Time and discovering our unique value proposition (client-server model that obviates methods such as screen sharing, using separate unsynchronized apps)

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Completing a majority of our MVP and finding a unique way differentiate our app and address a critical shortcoming of other apps (lack of real-time communication between patient/counselor sessions).

What we learned

A lot about mental illness, specifically trauma and EMDR therapy.

What's next for Lucent

In the future, we see Lucent being a platform for anyone exploring mental wellness. In addition to trauma, EMDR has been proven effective for a wide range of challenges. We plan to grow Lucent into a general tool for processing anxiety/stress by using EMDR bi-lateral queues in the form of self-help exercises.

Unabridged Story

One morning, I (Tim) asked God how I could start a faith and tech community at my school. This led me down a prayer bunny-trail of potential names, of which, I landed on Faith-Tech. That name didn't work out for obvious reasons, but praise God he used my distracted prayers to lead me to my awesome team.

Fast forward a few weeks, at a prayer meeting a sister at my church shared how her counseling practice was struggling with the abrupt move to tele-therapy. I prayed for her and asked her more about it. She introduced me to EMDR therapy and the challenges of doing it virtually. This is where our idea was born. She ended up playing a vital role as subject matter expert throughout our development.

After this interaction, I reached out to my friend, Hannah, to pitch this idea for an upcoming Hackathon. We needed help with front-end development, so Hannah reached out to Ryan, the first person that came up on DevPost. Turns out Ryan's wife is a therapist who has been doing EMDR therapy for years. We knew God was up to something. Ryan then invited his friend, Jacin, who created our incredible designs and produced the pitch video. We've all been blown away by God's providence in bringing us together and helping us work toward a God-glorifying end during a chaotic time.
