Inspiration
I was tired of texting my friends every day just to find out what they were up to. I wanted a way to see what my friend group was doing without that constant back-and-forth, and beyond that, I wanted making plans to be intuitive. Instead of everyone pulling up their calendars and cross-referencing schedules, I wanted an app that would just tell us, instantly, when we were all free.
What it does
Lual is a social calendar that surfaces shared free time among friends and turns it into real plans — no more digging through everyone's schedules or drowning in a 15-message group chat. It also tackles the tedious part of calendar apps: nobody wants to manually enter every class, shift, and event one by one. So Lual supports Apple Calendar import and AI-powered photo import — snap a picture of your schedule and it gets parsed straight into the app.
How we built it
I built Lual starting from an initial Cursor prompt and working through onboarding design, backend authentication (Google OAuth via Supabase), and all the way to App Store submission — screenshots, metadata, and release notes included.
Challenges we ran into
Right after launch, a surprising number of bugs surfaced that I had to fix fast, all while working two jobs. That forced me to get a lot more efficient with Claude Code and learn how to split up and parallelize my workflows instead of tackling everything sequentially.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
In a little over a month, Lual has reached almost 900 downloads!
What we learned
Beyond the technical lessons, the bigger takeaway was about listening to users. At a certain point, you're not just building for yourself anymore — you're building for the people actually using the app, and their feedback has to shape what comes next.
What's next for Lual
I'm hoping to keep growing Lual and make people's lives a little easier through this planning shortcut — helping friend groups spend less time coordinating and more time actually hanging out.
