Inspiration
As first-year students at Lehigh University, we have learned how important campus transportation is, especially because our campus has many hills and buildings that are far apart. The Go Lehigh Transit app helps us find bus information, but we think there is still room to make it easier to use. For example, entering our starting point and destination is not always smooth, and sometimes it can be hard to follow the bus’s real-time location when zooming in or out on the map. Also, when several bus routes appear at the same time, finding the right one can take extra effort. Another area for improvement is trip planning. It would be helpful if the app could give us directions that combine taking a bus and walking. It could also be more convenient if we could search directly for campus buildings instead of only bus stops. We believe these small improvements could make a big difference, especially for new students who are still learning their way around campus. Our goal is to make getting around Lehigh easier, clearer, and more convenient for everyone.
What it does
This is a smart campus transportation website designed to help students reach their destinations more easily and efficiently. The website supports three languages. Students can simply enter their destination, and the system will automatically recommend suitable routes and provide estimated travel times to help them plan their trips more effectively. In addition, the website offers two transportation options: campus shuttles and walking. Users can explore different bus routes and view bus locations on an interactive map, allowing them to choose the best travel option based on their needs. Users can also save their favorite locations for faster route searches in the future. Bus locations are updated every 20 seconds, helping students stay informed about shuttle movements and reduce unnecessary waiting time.
How we built it
We built LUbus as a web-based transportation platform designed to improve the campus commuting experience at Lehigh University. Our team used HTML, CSS, and JavaScript to develop an interactive, user-friendly website. We focused on creating a clean interface that makes it easier for students to search for campus locations, explore bus routes, and plan their journeys. We integrated interactive maps, campus location data, route planning, and live bus tracking to help students navigate the university more efficiently. We used GitHub for version control and team collaboration. Throughout development, we continuously tested and improved the website based on usability, functionality, and design. Our goal was to turn a complicated transportation experience into a simple, accessible platform that students can use directly from their browsers.
