Inspiration

Our 15-year-old co-founder got tired of eating frozen pizza every night his dad "cooked." The irony? His dad's phone was full of saved Instagram recipes. He just never made any of them.

That's the problem. Millions of people scroll past incredible recipes every day. They save them, screenshot them, and then never cook them. The gap isn't inspiration. Social media is full of that. The gap is action. There's no bridge from watching a 60-second recipe video to standing in your kitchen making it.

When we saw Eitan Bernath's brief for a recipe-to-grocery-list cooking tool, it felt personal. LoveYourChef turns any Instagram recipe into a step-by-step cooking guide. No more frozen pizza.

How we built it

LoveYourChef is a native iOS app built with Capacitor and React. The core flow is intentionally simple: share a recipe link from Instagram using the iOS share sheet, and Claude AI extracts the full recipe (ingredients, steps, timing, equipment) into a clean, structured format. Every recipe lands in a personal feed, ready to cook.

The guided cooking walkthrough is where it comes together. Instead of scrubbing through a video or squinting at a screenshot, users follow clear steps one at a time, at their own pace. No guesswork.

RevenueCat manages the freemium subscription model with a 7-day free trial for Pro features ($4.99/mo). Hands-free voice-guided cooking with ElevenLabs is coming soon as an upcoming Pro feature.

Challenges

Getting AI recipe extraction to work reliably was the primary technical challenge. Instagram posts all structure recipe content differently, requiring robust parsing logic.

The iOS share sheet integration required a native share extension that communicates with the main app. Straightforward in concept, but technically demanding within Capacitor's hybrid architecture.

What we learned

Teaching your teenage son entrepreneurship by building a real product together is equal parts amazing and terrifying. This last week had plenty of ups and downs. But we came together, didn't kill each other, and shipped something we're both genuinely proud of. Thanks to RevenueCat and Eitan for the push to grind hard and deliver magic.
