Inspiration

We were inspired by Stormhacks's Dating Show event and the vibrant personalities of the otter mascots. Combining that with inside jokes about SFU life, we ended up creating a comedic dating sim that showcases a humorous perspective on the social scene.

What it does

The project is a dating simulator game where you answer questions asked by the characters in a speed-dating format, earning enough points to hopefully win them over! Our aim is for the user to have fun and a little bit of a laugh at the eccentric and ridiculous characters we dreamt up.

How we built it

Love Surge began with a Google Doc outlining the plot, story progression, character details, and each Q&A set. Using IBIS Paint, we made custom sprites and backgrounds for the front end, then we created the robust back-end logic and architecture using C++ object-oriented programming, encapsulation, and class polymorphism. Finally, we converted it to a front-end HTML implementation with the help of Claude AI.

Challenges we ran into

Working on the project throughout the night was the biggest challenge -- our skills and cognition were rapidly deteriorating as the night went on. Trying to pace our naps and keep within the deadline was the most difficult part of this hackathon.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We really pushed ourselves as each team member had varying levels of experience in different coding languages, so it was a great accomplishment to put our skills together and try a language none of us had a ton of experience with: HTML.

An important point to us was that the story and images were created entirely without AI. This was also all our first time making a game! We had to think about user experience when designing the game, rather than our existing skills simply coding for test cases.

What we learned

We learned to have more confidence in our existing skills. Going into this hackathon, we all felt like novices who didn't have much to bring to a competition with seemingly skilled professionals. As the night went on and we grew more and more excited for the final project, we realized we have way more potential than we initially thought!

What's next for Love Surge: An SFU Dating Sim

If we had more time, we would implement a feature to view all the achieved endings that the user won. Also a way to create and load save files, or load game chapters from launch.
