Inspiration

Our team was inspired by Valentine's Day, Chrome's off-line web game, and the famous video game, Super Mario Bros. We really liked the idea of Mario going on an adventure to save the princess, our character, The Boy, go on his own adventure to deliver a love letter to his crush. We also learned to make a similar style parallax scrolling background effect, that made 2-d pictures look 3-d. The dinosaur game helped us style the obstacles and point systems. We were able to find inspiration in games we've played before in order to put this game together.

What it does

Our project is a 2-d platform game, where The Boy, collects love letters so that he can deliver his own to his crush when enough points are obtained. He avoids obstacles and picks ups letters by jumping up and down while running around the city. If he hits too many obstacles, the Boy will not be able to give his letter in time for Valentine's Day and will be heartbroken.

How we built it

This game is made using Python and Pygame. Initially, we were using Replit.com for a more seamless teamwork experience. However, we migrated over to Visual Studio Code and stayed in touch over Discord Andy focused on the animations, Peter focused on the back end, Winnie created the designs and Anita contributed to a few of the designs.

Challenges we ran into

The biggest challenge we ran into was how to get from the Start Menu into the gameplay itself. We spent many hours just going over the program line by line, using Visual Studio's debugger, and watching YouTube tutorials to try to find the problem. Another challenge was timing the obstacles that appeared for players. We also ran into problems with getting the background to scroll seamlessly Eventually we were able to solve all the challenges that we ran into.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud of overcoming the challenges that we ran into throughout the whole project. Debugging is the hardest part of the project, and we were able to find a solution with much perseverance.

What we learned

We learned that breaks are very important for breakthroughs to happen, and that by not giving up, we were inevitably going to find the solutions to our challenges.

What's next for Love Messenger!

We hope to develop an unlimited mode, and story mode that will divulge more about what happens when the boy finally gives the letter! Or a leader board!
