Want to donate food, clothes, or hygiene products but don't know who to give it to? This website makes finding donation centers easier and more accessible.
Inspiration Throughout High school, I have organized several food, clothes, and hygiene drives so students at my school can help the local community by donating their unwanted items. However, finding nearby donation centers and shelters currently accepting donations always took me a long time. In my area, there is also a high concentration of homeless individuals. I made this website to easily connect people in need with people who want to help.
What it does This website tracks a user's location and shows donation centers that are near the user
How we built it I used HTML to create the format of the webpage. Then I used CSS to change the font, add an image of the organization's logo, and create margins around the text. Next, I used an API key to get access to Google Maps and I used Javascript to track the user's location.
Challenges we ran into This was my first time using an API key and I struggled with implementing it properly. I also thought the JavaScript code for the functionality of the map was a challenge. And while my map doesn't fully function, I want to learn more so I can improve it in the future.
Accomplishments that we're proud of I'm proud that I improved my web development skills and I'm proud that I challenged myself to get out of my comfort zone.
What we learned I learned how to add a map to my website. I also learned how to adjust an image in HTML.
What's next for Love Makes the World Go Round In the future, I hope to expand this project so that it not only locates nearby centers but also provides a free delivery service so it can be even easier to help those in need. With the delivery service, people in the United States can help fight against poverty around the world.
