Inspiration
“Shall I compare thee to a summer’s day?” Shakespeare asked in his poem. To praise and to remember his beloved’s beauty, he wrote this Sonnet 18.
How can non-poet people remember and protect our sweet relationship? Here is love insurance!
According to a research post in the Washington Post, over 87% percent of relationships fail before marriage. Also, research in Pew Research Center shows that over 67% percent of couples feel difficulty dealing with their relationship. The reason varies. The most frequent reasons are they do know what to do when they get together or they lack a sense of ceremony.
This insurance is designed for young couples or single to educate them how to spend time with each other, to treasure significant moments and build positive relationships. What love insurance brings to couples in love is a spiritual and material harvest.
What It Does
Love Insurance, our web-based application is designed to educate couples to support their need for social connection, expand their own relationship and facilitate their communication. For the young couple, our product could help them to find the common ground, learn to respect the differences and strengthen their own relationship.
With the advanced algorithm of our application, the users would be classified into different groups and paired with the best matched person based on the Game selection, a test that we offered. Our product would allow the matched users to chat as well. Moreover, our web-based application consists of several functions involving recommending the dating spots, setting up and assigning some tasks for the couple to complete and sharing the comments with other users. A bonus system is set up and built to reward those users who make some progress by finishing the weekly tasks. The bonus system is listed below.
There are 26 tasks in total. All these tasks are divided into 5 phases. For the first 4 phases, each phase is made of 5 tasks. For the last phases, it would have 6 tasks. Once the user finishes a task, a bonus would be unlocked and rewarded. For example, the total reward is set to be 100 USD. During the effective date of insurance policy, if the policy-holders and designated partner register marriage, they will be able to get roses, bonus or our NFT product as reward.
Reward Formula 100 / 26 = 3.8
Phase one (5 tasks), bonus: 3.8 X 5 X 2 Phase two (5 tasks), bonus: 3.8 X 5 X 2 Phase three (5 tasks), bonus: 3.8 X 5 X 2 Phase four (5 tasks), bonus: 3.8 X 5 X 2 Phase five (6 tasks), bonus: 3.8 X 5 X 2
The retail price of Love Insurance is 100 USD, which could be paid as a one-off payment or in monthly installments.
How We Built It
First we did a round of brainstorming. Each person contributed and pitched two ideas. This idea of love insurance stands out.
Then we design the product workflow and our UI / UX designer designs the wireframe using sketches.
We use React with Material UI to implement the front-end for users.
We use Python’s flask framework to implement backend business logic and we store the database in NOSQL database mongoDB.
Since the application needs to support media files, we store user images and insurance files in the Amazon website service S3 storage.
We also use additional third party service to handle user payment and document signing. We integrate Stripe payment API to let users make money transactions. Then we integrate Docusign API to let users sign the insurance.
There are web2 parts and web3 parts of the web application. The traditional web 2 technical architecture is listed above, when in web 3 part, we use Solidity to implement smart contracts that manage and mint NFT (non-fungible token) as a recognition and reward for users who stay together long enough to make the insurance pay out.
On the frontend, we connect user’s metamask blockchain wallets and allow them to claim NFT if they complete all tasks and upload their marriage certificate.
There are also non-technical parts of the project, we put together fun games for couples to do, and put together educational content for users to study. We sincerely hope that the web app educates users to be supportive in a relationship and to make relationships fun.
Challenges We Ran Into
One of the challenges is that our software, especially the stripe payment API and blockchain component needs to integrate.
Given a short amount of time, we manage to complete a full stack project as well as the business plan.
Accomplishments That We’re Proud Of
Implement a recommendation algorithm to help the user to find the matched partner based on our test. With this recommendation algorithm, the user might be able to make some new friends and expand their relationships.
Implement a tracking system to remind the user to finish the monthly tasks on time. For the young couple, a sort of weekly task is set up to help them to enhance their own relationship. With this tracking system, the young couple could document and record their precious experience and memories by completing the weekly tasks. Eventually, Implement a recommendation system to set up a tour plan for the users for their upcoming dates. a recommendation system. We will also Implement a multiple of functions including logining in Wechat via scanning, sharing a moment with friends and writing a comment.
What We Learned
Some thoughts: Diverse team is key to success. We have a great team with Computer Science, Interactive Arts, and Business Management. This allows a more general design of our product with people who are capable of providing deep knowledge about one specific area and people who have other industry ideas.
Relationship management is key to human beings. Through planning and background search, we are more concerned about the divorced rate in not only the United States but also in other countries. We are happy that we did something that is meaningful not only to us but also to people around us.
Segmentation is key to the project. We develop our groups into four segments: product design, UI/UX design, educational content development, and software development. Tasks could be more effectively distributed to each team member, and communication within different groups is conducted by our team manager. Detailed concentration of tasks allows a more comfortable and efficient working progress, leading to an easier but better solution.
What's Next For Love insurance
We will provide insurance for single people looking for their loved one. We will implement a dating app feature to encourage users to spend time together.
The next steps are to add more educational content and activities for couples for fun and educational purposes.
Users should be able to also share the game and the lover certificate they receive via social media such as meta and LinkedIn.
Then we do have more ambitious goals. We want not only to issue NFT as a certificate for couples, but also provide long term financial incentives for NFT holders. We will implement a smart contract to reserve 30% percent of the lover fee for NFT holders. NFT holders are eligible to claim the fee monthly. The longer the NFT holders hold NFT, the more fee they can claim.
Where does the fee come from? The fee comes from the couples who failed to stay together and complete the task.
We also plan to bring real world utility to love NFT. We want to reach out to restaurants and produce love insurance certificate cards. Couples can present the card when they are in the partnered restaurant to receive a discount.
Bring awareness of strengthening a couple's relationship. We hope through spreading this web app, people could be more aware that we should spend time with loved ones in such a fast-paced society.
This is indeed our first inspiration and our ultimate goal of this project. This is what we believe the message that HackNYU is trying to deliver.
