Inspiration The Forbidden Equation — a story of an Indian physicist and an English woman who fell in love in 1960s Oxford, only to be torn apart by cultural prejudice. Their grandson Suresh discovers their hidden letters decades later, and their granddaughter Carla — raised in England with the Basu name — completes the equation they started together. That story asked one question: What if they had understood each other's worlds better? Over 12 million cross-cultural couples exist worldwide, and the #1 challenge they face isn't language — it's understanding cultural context. Why does your partner's family do things differently? What holidays matter to them? What music moves them? What traditions shape how they love? Love Beyond Borders was born from The Forbidden Equation — the belief that love across cultures shouldn't require you to figure it all out alone. AI can bridge the gap. Not by replacing understanding, but by giving couples the cultural intelligence to fall deeper in love with each other's heritage. Some equations are not meant to be solved by one person. They are passed down. Hand to hand. Heart to heart. Across oceans and decades and silence.

What it does Love Beyond Borders lets couples select their home countries and instantly explore each other's cultures through 7 interactive tabs:

All content opens inside the app — users never leave. 30 countries supported with rich cultural data for 6 flagship countries (India, Turkey, Spain, France, Japan, Italy).

How we built it Frontend: Flutter (Dart) — cross-platform mobile app with dark/light theme, falling petals animation, and in-app WebView browser AI/Search Layer: You.com Search API powers three live features:

Real-time cultural news aggregation This Week events discovery Dynamic content enrichment for all 30 countries

Backend: Flask (Python) REST API deployed on Akamai Cloud Computing (Linode) at 172.237.117.6:5000

User authentication (register/login) PostgreSQL database for user profiles Dockerised deployment on Linode Compute

Architecture: Flutter App → You.com API (live search/news) Flutter App → Linode Backend (auth/user data) Flutter App → In-app WebView (YouTube, articles) Key Technical Decisions:

WebView-based in-app browser keeps users inside the app instead of redirecting to external browsers Hardcoded cultural data for 6 countries ensures instant loading with API-powered live content layered on top Android 11+ compatibility with proper intent queries configuration

Challenges we ran into

Android 11+ URL blocking — Without block in AndroidManifest.xml, all URL launches silently fail. Took hours to diagnose. External browser UX — Initial implementation opened YouTube/news in Chrome, losing users. Rebuilt with webview_flutter for in-app browsing. You.com API type safety — Search API returns mixed types requiring careful Dart type handling to prevent runtime crashes. iOS code signing without Mac — Used CodeMagic's automatic signing with App Store Connect API key to build iOS without local Xcode.
