Inspiration

I wanted to create a meditation space that is instantly available - something you can step into anytime, anywhere. A quiet world you can trust. No setup. No friction. Just presence.

Why

I have aphantasia, which means I can’t mentally “see” imagery. Traditional meditation that relies on visualization has always been challenging.

So I set out to build a virtual environment that does the visualisation for you—a space that makes meditation tangible, interactive, and embodied.

Lotus Platform became my way of exploring how VR can help people experience meditation concepts that are usually abstract.

What it does

Lotus Platform is a simple but meaningful VR meditation world built around interaction and discovery. You arrive on a wooden platform floating in the sky, surrounded by calm ambience.

As you interact with hand-tracked gestures, you unlock small “skills” and energetic tools meant to support meditative practice.

It’s both a peaceful retreat and a sandbox for exploring mind–body concepts through XR.

How to play

For this prototype you can:

  • Pinch your fingers together to generate a small energy ball in your hands.
  • Bring that energy into the Fukawa Sphere on the altar in front of you to activate a reveal in the sky - your first step in learning energy skills.

The whole experience is designed to feel intuitive, minimal, and calming.

How we built it

  • IWSDK for hand tracking, locomotion, interaction, spatial audio, and general XR magic.
  • Vite + Three.js for the lightweight WebXR visual layer.
  • A mix of procedural and AI-assisted content for textures and ambience.
  • Audio soundscape with 432 Hz binaural beats.

The goal was to prototype quickly while keeping the world stable and immersive.

Challenges we ran into

Time was the biggest constraint - features like multi-user meditation and the “energy box” progression system didn’t make it into the demo.

Fine-tuning natural hand-tracked gestures required iteration, especially balancing precision with comfort.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

  • Creating a genuinely calming space that people want to sit in.
  • Finger-pinch particle summoning - simple, but surprisingly magical and fun.
  • Demonstrating that meditation mechanics can feel physical, not just conceptual.

What we learned

  • IWSDK makes it incredibly fast to build polished, responsive XR interactions.
  • Even a small VR environment, when designed intentionally, can meaningfully support mindfulness.
  • Visualization barriers (like aphantasia) can be softened or removed entirely with the right sensory scaffolding.

What's next for Lotus Platform

This demo is just the seed.

Next steps include:

  • Multi-user group meditation with shared energy fields.
  • A progression of meditative “skills” (breath tools, grounding, astral awareness, energy shaping).
  • A deeper narrative layer mirroring ancient and modern meditation practices.
  • Expanded environments, rituals, and guided experiences for Meta Horizon.

Lotus Platform could grow into a fully-fledged meditation ecosystem - calm, magical, and always within reach.
