Inspiration
In physical retail stores, sales data only records what was successfully purchased. However, a large number of customer intentions remain invisibleproducts searched for but unavailable, different variants requested, or items silently abandoned. We were inspired by the idea that hidden demand is also data, and if captured correctly, it could help small retailers reduce revenue loss and make smarter stocking decisions.
What it does
LostSale Insight is an intelligent retail analytics system that detects missed purchase events inside physical stores. By combining product interaction signals, manual inputs, and inventory awareness, the system identifies items customers wanted but could not buy. It then converts this silent demand into actionable insights, enabling retailers to restock efficiently, reduce lost sales, and improve customer satisfaction.
How we built it
We designed a hybrid system combining data capture, processing, and analytics. Customer intent signals are collected through simple interaction points such as product scans, unavailable item logging, or assisted manual entry. This data is processed using a lightweight analytics engine that maps intent with real-time inventory status. Finally, a dashboard visualizes missed demand trends, high-loss products, and restocking priorities for the retailer.
Challenges we ran into
One major challenge was accurately identifying intent without disturbing the natural shopping experience. We also had to design a solution that remains affordable and practical for small retail stores, avoiding complex hardware or expensive infrastructure. Balancing simplicity, accuracy, and real-world usability required multiple design iterations.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We successfully transformed an invisible retail problem into measurable data. Our system demonstrates that even minimal interaction signals can reveal powerful business insights. Most importantly, the solution stays cost-effective, scalable, and realistic for real-world deployment.
What we learned
Through this project, we learned how real innovation often lies in observing unnoticed problems rather than adding complexity. We gained experience in system thinking, data interpretation, and user-centric design, while understanding the constraints of physical retail environments.
What's next for LostSale Insight
Next, we aim to integrate predictive restocking recommendations, multi-store analytics, and deeper behavioral insights. Our long-term vision is to build a smart decision support layer for offline retail, helping small businesses compete with data-driven online platforms.
