Inspiration

Losing something valuable isn’t just frustrating—it’s a heart-sinking moment of panic. We’ve all been there. Whether it was us or our friends, the search for lost belongings often meant endless retracing of steps, relying on outdated lost-and-found centers, or simply giving up.

And what about when you find something that clearly belongs to someone else? You want to help, but without a way to reach the owner, your only choice is handing it over to the police and hoping it finds its way back.

That’s why we created Lostie—a smarter, faster, and more reliable way to reunite lost items with their owners. No more guessing games, no more dead ends—just a community-driven platform where people can post, connect, and recover lost belongings with ease.

What it does

Future for Lostie is designed to enhance the likelihood of lost items being successfully reunited with their owners. Whether reporting a lost item or posting about a found belonging, our platform streamlines the process, making it more efficient and accessible.

📝 Report Lost & Found Items Lost an item? Create a detailed report including a description, the last known location, the time it was lost, and any distinguishing features. Found an item? Assist in its return by posting when and where it was found, along with relevant identifying details. 🤖 AI-Generated Item Descriptions If a user does not have an image of their lost item, our AI-powered system can generate a visual representation based on their description, improving recognition and retrieval efforts. 📸 AI-Powered Image Scanning & Matching

  • Users who find an item can scan it, allowing our AI to analyze key features and identify potential matches within the lost item database.
  • If a match is detected, the system automatically notifies the owner, enabling direct communication with the individual who found the item.

By integrating advanced AI technology with an intuitive reporting system, Lostie simplifies the lost-and-found process, fostering a more connected and effective way to recover lost belongings.

How we built it

In developing Lostie, we focused on creating an intuitive and effective platform to help users recover lost items and facilitate the return of found belongings. The name "Lostie" represents our mission to bridge the gap between lost and found items, providing a seamless and accessible solution for everyone.

We drew inspiration from the desire to simplify the often frustrating experience of losing or finding personal items. Our design philosophy emphasized a clean and straightforward interface that would be easy to navigate, while also incorporating AI-driven features for enhanced user experience.

The technological stack behind Lostie includes:

  • React.js for building an interactive and dynamic frontend
  • Node.js for backend server-side logic and handling real-time interactions
  • CSS, JavaScript, and HTML for styling, structure, and interactivity *OpenAI for AI-powered features like item description generation and image matching

During development, we used React.js to create a responsive and engaging user interface, allowing for seamless interactions between lost and found posts. The use of Node.js powered our backend services, enabling efficient data handling and smooth communication between the app and users. OpenAI played a pivotal role by providing AI capabilities to generate item descriptions and match found items with lost ones, optimizing the chances of successful reunions.

With this combination of cutting-edge technology and a user-centric approach, Future for Lostie was developed as a reliable, accessible, and efficient platform to help users find their lost items and return found ones with ease.

Challenges we ran into

  • Inexperienced Team Members: Over 50% of our team were first-time Hackathon participants, meaning we had to quickly adapt to the fast-paced environment and unfamiliar competition format. This required fast learning and efficient problem-solving to stay on track.
  • Diverse Skill Sets: Not every team member had prior coding experience, which meant we had to be resourceful and learn new technologies on the go. From mastering React.js and Node.js to integrating OpenAI features, most of us had to quickly adapt to contribute to the project’s development.
  • AI Integration: The incorporation of AI to generate item descriptions and scan images for matching lost items was a complex challenge. Ensuring the AI's accuracy and real-time functionality required us to thoroughly test, refine, and adjust parameters to achieve the desired outcome, which added considerable development time.
  • Feature Prioritization: Brainstorming and deciding on the most effective features to maximize the chances of lost items being returned was a critical task. We had to balance simplicity and functionality, ensuring that our app was intuitive for users while offering advanced AI capabilities for matching lost and found items. ## Accomplishments that we're proud of We are incredibly proud of the progress and success we've achieved with Lostie, especially considering the challenges we faced along the way. Our team, with little prior coding experience, managed to successfully develop a fully functional app that solves a real-world problem. This accomplishment is a testament to the dedication, persistence, and collaborative spirit we fostered throughout the hackathon.

Despite having team members located in different areas, we remained connected and worked efficiently by keeping the lines of communication open. Regular meetings and constant updates ensured we stayed on track and were able to deliver a cohesive product.

What truly excites us is knowing that Lostie serves a practical, meaningful purpose: helping people reunite with their lost belongings. We created an app with real-world value, one that can have an immediate impact on people’s lives. Even more, we are excited about the app’s potential for future improvement, particularly in refining AI accuracy and expanding its scalability to support even more users.

We’re proud that, as a team, we took on a challenge that tested our technical abilities, creativity, and resilience—and emerged with a product that we believe can make a difference. The journey wasn’t always easy, but the satisfaction of seeing Lostie come to life has been immensely rewarding.

What we learned

Throughout the development of Lostie, we quickly realized there is always more to learn. As a team with limited technical experience, we embraced the challenge and stayed open to acquiring new skills, especially in coding. Initially, we doubted our ability to build a fully functional web app in just two days, but our passion, determination, and willingness to step out of our comfort zones made it possible.

One of the most important lessons we learned was the power of effective communication. We made sure to listen to each other, share ideas, and collaborate closely throughout the development process. This constant exchange of thoughts and feedback played a huge role in our success and helped us achieve a result we’re all proud of.

We also discovered the importance of pushing past our own limits. Every time a new obstacle emerged, the journey felt overwhelming. However, by breaking down the challenges into smaller, manageable milestones, we were able to keep moving forward and ultimately achieve more than we had originally thought possible. The process proved that challenges can be conquered one step at a time—showing us that with persistence, communication, and a willingness to learn, we can overcome any hurdle.

What's next for Lostie

The journey of Lostie doesn’t end here. We have exciting plans to enhance the app further and provide an even better experience for our users. Here’s a look at some of the key developments we’re planning: Enhanced AI Scanning for Better Matching One of our main goals for the future is to improve the AI scanning function to make it even more accurate and reliable in matching found items to lost item descriptions. By refining the AI algorithms, we aim to provide users with more relevant recommendations, helping them reunite lost items with their rightful owners faster and more effectively. This will involve continuous training of our AI system with more diverse data and feedback from users, making the matching process smarter over time. AI-Generated Images with Improved Accuracy Currently, our AI generates images based on users’ descriptions of lost items, but we see potential for even greater precision. In the future, we plan to enhance the AI’s ability to generate clearer, more detailed images of lost items, helping users visualize their belongings better. This will make it easier for others to recognize and return items that have been found. Additionally, we aim to incorporate advanced image recognition techniques to enhance the generation of images that match the users’ memories more closely. Accessibility Enhancements We are committed to ensuring that Lostie is accessible to everyone, including individuals with various health barriers. Future updates will include features such as voice navigation, text-to-speech functionality, and improved contrast for users with visual impairments. We also plan to implement simplified user interfaces, ensuring that people with disabilities can use the app with ease and without barriers. Our goal is to create an inclusive platform where no one is left behind, and everyone has the same opportunity to recover or return lost items. Ensuring Security and Preventing Scams One of our top priorities is ensuring that users feel secure and protected while using Lostie. We plan to implement additional safety features that prevent users from falling victim to scams, ensuring that lost items are truly returned to their rightful owners without any illicit demands. To achieve this, we’ll introduce a verification system that helps guarantee the return process is legitimate. If a user encounters someone asking for money or making unreasonable demands in exchange for returning a lost item, they will have the option to report the incident. This will allow us to investigate and take necessary action to prevent such unethical and illegal behavior. Our goal is to create a trusted platform where users can confidently seek and return lost items, knowing that their safety and privacy are protected every step of the way.
