Inspiration
Our love for games led to us deciding to create a game of our own for our KnightHacks IX project. The combat and general gameplay loop were inspired by Super Mario and Hollow Knight.
What it does
Lost In The Forest is a 2D platforming adventure game that follows Lenny through a decaying forest on a quest to destroy all the amulet shards and save T.K from the amulet's curse. Along the way you'll encounter friendly Blooms who join you on your journey and hostile Blights, each with unique abilities and behaviors. You can choose to evade them or face them head-on with Lenny's own ability set.
How we built it
We used Unity to build all the game components with the assistance of Codex to make up for our lack of knowledge and experience.
Challenges we ran into
We mainly struggled to delegate tasks to each member while managing scope creep by resisting the constant temptation to add more new features. We also encountered many issues with merge conflicts since we were constantly pushing to GitHub at the same time.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Only one of us had any prior experience with Unity and C#, so the rest of us were coming into this project completely blind. Despite our severe lack of knowledge, in the end we were able to build a fully working game end-to-end with distinct enemy AI and a clear gameplay loop.
What we learned
By creating an actual project, we were able to grasp the basics of how to create a game with Unity and C#. It was our first hackathon, so we also learned a lot about teamwork and managing scope under time constraints.
What's next for Lost in The Forest
We will continue to polish the game and elevate it to the next step by adding more levels and abilities, as well as improving the enemies' AI and the aesthetics of the game.
