The idea for Lost in Kenya was sparked by the distressing events of the 2024 Antifinance Bill protests in Kenya. During these demonstrations, many people went missing, leaving their families in a state of despair and uncertainty. Watching the chaos unfold and seeing the struggles of those searching for their loved ones made me realize the urgent need for a more effective solution. This personal connection to the issue fueled my determination to create a platform that could use technology to improve the process of finding missing individuals.

As I delved into the problem, I discovered that while there were systems in place for managing missing persons cases, they were often outdated and inefficient, particularly in high-stress situations like the recent protests. I decided to focus on building a centralized platform that could bring together data from various sources and provide real-time updates. Integrating AI technology was a key part of this vision, as it promised to enhance the accuracy and speed of identifying and matching missing persons.

Building Lost in Kenya was a complex but rewarding journey. I brought together a team of experts in AI, web development, and database management to help turn this vision into reality. We developed a platform featuring a website, USSD code, and WhatsApp chatbot to ensure accessibility for everyone. The AI component was designed to analyze data from multiple sources and improve the efficiency of matching and searching for missing individuals. This multi-faceted approach was crucial for creating a comprehensive and user-friendly solution.

Throughout the development process, I faced several challenges. One of the biggest hurdles was integrating data from different sources while ensuring accuracy and security. Additionally, I encountered technical difficulties with the AI algorithms, which required significant adjustments to achieve the desired performance. Engaging with stakeholders and aligning the platform with their needs, especially in the context of the recent protests, was also a challenging but essential part of the process.

Despite these challenges, working on Lost in Kenya has been an incredibly fulfilling experience. The successful launch of the platform has shown me how technology can be harnessed to drive social change and make a real difference in people’s lives. By addressing the critical issue of missing persons with an AI-powered solution, I’ve been able to contribute to improving the search process and set a new standard for handling such crises. The positive feedback and increasing engagement with the platform reaffirm my commitment to using technology for the greater good.
