Inspiration

Dungeons & Dragons can create memorable adventures, but its rules, preparation, and need for a group can make it difficult for newcomers to get started. We imagined LoreMaster as an Alexa+ app concept that could lower that barrier: a welcoming game master that helps players explore a story, learn the basics, and make choices together. Our current project is a browser-based demo of that idea, using scripted adventures and a deterministic parser to show how the experience could work.

What it does

LoreMaster is a browser-based demo of an Alexa+ app idea for making tabletop adventures easier to try. Players create a party, explore scripted stories, and take actions by typing or using browser voice input. A deterministic parser interprets commands, while the game handles turns, checks, combat, inventory, and story progress.

How we built it

We built the demo by shaping the game loop and interface piece by piece, using AI tools to help us explore implementation options, organize the project, and make decisions as new challenges appeared. That process helped us turn a broad idea into a playable prototype with adventures, character management, and clear feedback about the game’s rules and state.

Challenges we ran into

The hardest parts were making the experience feel approachable without losing the depth that makes tabletop games engaging, designing a polished interface, and deciding how generative AI should fit into a system that still needs consistent rules. We also worked through the small but important edge cases that emerge when language, player turns, and game state meet. LoreMaster is an early demo, but it gave us a clearer picture of how conversational AI could help more people find their way into shared storytelling.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We brought several parts of the tabletop experience together in one playable prototype: a shared party and turn flow, battles with visible outcomes, and a parser that understands varied player commands. We’re also proud of making the rules and game state visible, so players can follow why an action succeeded or failed.

What we learned

We learned how interconnected tabletop mechanics are, and how much care it takes to keep turns, combat, and progression consistent. Building the parser taught us to use context to interpret player intent while keeping the game’s rules deterministic. We also learned how to use AI tools during development and how to make design and implementation decisions as the project evolved.

What's next for LoreMaster

Next, we want to add a buff system, create more stories, and give players greater freedom to approach challenges in their own way. We also want to improve the overall experience through more testing and refinement. Longer term, LoreMaster could explore how a high-level LLM might support more flexible storytelling within a reliable game engine, as part of an Alexa+ experience.
