The brief highlights challenges such as the need for more business managerial capacity, unequal access to funding, and low adoption of digital solutions. These challenges inspired the creators of Surabaya UMKM 101 to develop a solution that addresses these issues and boosts the MSME ecosystem in Surabaya City.
What it does:
Surabaya UMKM 101 program aims to support and empower MSMEs in Surabaya City. It consists of two phases: mapping and connecting. In the mapping phase, the program comprehensively analyses the city's MSME potential, identifying each business's unique strengths and challenges. This mapping helps create a solid foundation for understanding the ecosystem and tailoring solutions accordingly. In the connecting phase, the program facilitates connections between MSMEs and various stakeholders in the business ecosystem, including digital solution start-ups, corporate partners, community organizations, and the government. The goal is to provide MSMEs access to resources, funding, and knowledge necessary for their growth and success.
How we built it:
We are combining research, data analysis, and strategic partnerships. They conducted extensive research on the challenges faced by MSMEs in Surabaya City, using data from sources such as the 2019 BPS data, Bank Indonesia MSME Financial Report Survey, and other relevant reports. The program was designed based on this research to address the identified issues specifically. The creators established partnerships with digital solution start-ups, corporate partners, community organizations, and government agencies to ensure the program's effectiveness. These partnerships helped create a robust support network for MSMEs and facilitated the program's implementation.
Challenges we ran into:
While developing Surabaya UMKM 101, the team encountered several challenges. As highlighted in the brief, one significant challenge was the limited educational background of many MSME owners. This posed a hurdle in designing a program that effectively addresses their managerial capacity needs. The unequal access to funding and low adoption of digital solutions also presented obstacles to creating a comprehensive support system.
