Inspiration

Conflicts and disasters cause millions of kids to miss formal education. We wanted to provide a solution for refugee kids to access small and simple educational content and incrementally build on that. We also wanted to connect these kids with volunteers and teachers yearning to help them.

What it does

A mobile app for kids that does the following.

  • Provides mini courses (small educational content coupled with quizzes) that rewards the kids with a badge on completion.
  • Courses can be targeted at gender and age to address sensitive topics.
  • Recommends which mini courses kids can take based on what you have completed.
  • Allow kids to incrementally work on a topic by following the recommendations.
  • Ability to work on mini courses offline when there is no connectivity.
  • Ability to send messages asking for help on some content.
Mini courses are specifically designed to be small to get maximum engagement. Kids will not be discouraged to give up after some time as the time spent is not long.

A web app for volunteers/teachers that does the following.

  • Ability to add mini courses. Set pre-requisites so that kids know which mini courses to take before that.
  • Content automatically checked for unsuitable content.
  • Ability to respond to messages from kids who need help.

Why we chose the name lore?

'Lore' means body of knowledge passed on by word of mouth and informally. Our app aspires to pass knowledge through small contents rather than a very formal way.

How we built it

  • We used ionic for building the frontend.
  • Firebase for building the backend services.
  • Facebook for login integration.
  • Angular JS for web app.
