Inspiration
I’ve always been fascinated by Greek mythology and the thrill of collectibles. Halfway through the hackathon, I realised my original idea wasn’t sparking joy, so I pivoted to something I was passionate about. Combining mythology, trivia, and the fun of building a digital collection felt like the perfect way to create a game that could thrive on Reddit.
What it does
Loot of Olympus is a Daily Challenge game built for Reddit’s Devvit Web platform.
- Every 3 hours, a new Greek mythology question appears.
- The first 10 correct responders earn a unique collectible tied to that question.
- Collectibles are displayed in a user’s profile: unlocked ones are colourful, while unclaimed ones are grey silhouettes.
- Players can track their progress, correct and wrong answers, and aim to build a complete collection.
How I built it
- Devvit Web for post scheduling, question handling, and data storage.
- React + TypeScript for building the interface and game logic.
- Tailwind CSS for fast, responsive styling.
- Redis to store user data, answers, and collectibles.
- Coded in just 3 days, squeezing in time during lunch breaks and short moments between classes.
Challenges I ran into
- Time constraints: Only 3 days to build meant focusing on an MVP.
- Learning curve: Devvit APIs and scheduling were new to me, so I had to adapt quickly.
- Scope creep: Resisting the temptation to add too many features within the hackathon timeframe.
Accomplishments that I'm proud of
- Pivoting mid-hackathon and still shipping a fully functional game.
- Creating a polished and responsive UI that feels natural inside Reddit.
- Designing a system that encourages recurring engagement (every 3 hours) instead of one-off play.
- Building something that merges my personal passion (mythology + collectibles) with a community-driven platform.
What we learned
- How to use Devvit Web effectively for recurring content.
- The importance of designing around engagement loops to keep players coming back.
- That passion projects often lead to better results; pivoting to what I cared about unlocked more creativity.
- How to ship under extreme time pressure without losing polish.
What's next for Loot of Olympus
- More themed communities: Expanding to other subreddits (e.g., Norse mythology, famous inventors, fantasy worlds).
- User-generated questions: Letting Redditors contribute their own challenges and collectibles.
- Leaderboards & competition: Showcasing top collectors and encouraging friendly rivalry.
- Scalability: Expanding the system for larger player bases and longer-term engagement.
