Inspiration
Loomweaver — Stories That Remember. Characters That Feel.
Inspiration
Have you ever played a game where you make an important choice, but the character forgets it just minutes later? We wanted to solve this problem by making game characters remember player actions and respond differently based on their experiences.
Our inspiration was to make interactive storytelling more meaningful and accessible, especially for indie developers and small teams who lack the resources of large gaming studios.
What it does
Loomweaver is a Dynamic Interactive Narrative Engine that helps developers create NPCs with long-term memory, evolving emotional states, and relationships influenced by player choices.
It combines three core components:
- Memory Ledger: Records important player interactions for future scenes.
- Emotion Vector: Tracks character emotions such as trust, fear, affection, and respect.
- Reaction Rules: Allows developers to define how characters respond based on their memories and emotional states.
For example, if a player lies to a guard early in a game, the guard can remember that event and respond with suspicion when they meet again.
How we built it
Our planned technology stack includes Python and Flask for the story API, Java for the NPC Brain, HTML, CSS, and JavaScript for the authoring interface, and SQLite for storing story data and character states.
The prototype is designed around a branching story with multiple choices, NPC state updates, and a visual inspector that helps developers understand why a character reacts in a particular way.
Challenges and learning
One of our main challenges is coordinating multiple components while keeping the project achievable within the hackathon timeline. We are focusing on a small, functional prototype, clear rule-based logic, and a defined integration plan.
Through this project, we aim to strengthen our skills in backend development, data structures, API integration, and interactive application design.
What's next
Our vision is to make Loomweaver an open framework that indie developers can integrate into their games, with future support for game engines and optional AI-assisted narrative authoring.
