Inspiration
We spend years learning how to build careers, manage money, and take care of our bodies. But when it comes to the person we might spend the rest of our life with, we’re mostly expected to figure it out ourselves.
That felt crazy to us. So we built Loomi.
What it does
Loomi is Duolingo for your relationship: short, beautiful lessons based on real relationship science, written by an 8× best-selling writer and developed with psychology experts, that help couples understand each other and stay close.
Every lesson ends with one small thing to try in real life and earns XP that unlocks sidequests cards: fun date ideas to do together.
Everything else supports it: daily questions, shared memories timeline/map, and home/lock screen widgets.
How we built it
We studied everything from language-learning apps to games, fitness products, and magazines, then asked how those same ideas could make someone genuinely excited to learn about the person they love. The app itself is built with React Native and Expo, with RevenueCat powering subscriptions.
Challenges we ran into
Building it was harder than we expected because there wasn’t really a blueprint for what we wanted to make.
The other challenge was more human. Relationship advice can easily feel clinical, preachy or therapy-like. We wanted Loomi to feel like the opposite: something two happy people open on the couch, laugh about, learn from, and leave feeling a little closer than before.
That meant obsessing over a difficult balance: making serious science feel simple and emotional without making it less true.
Distribution was very difficult too. Since there is nothing like Loomi that exists on the market, we had to figure out everything ourselves. It took us over 450 attempts to find content that would perform well and lead people to the app.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Loomi went live on the App Store in late August, approved on its first submission. Since then, our 460+ videos have passed 3.5M views, leading to 1,400+ downloads and close to 360 trials.
What we learned
Couples apps have a hidden weakness: if one partner loses interest, the whole account dies. So we made Loomi work for one person first, with their partner joining free whenever they’re ready.
We also studied 200+ app onboardings and talked to founders running apps at $500k+ in monthly revenue. The biggest takeaway: onboarding is close to half of an app's success, so ours ended up with more unique screens than the rest of the app.
What's next for Loomi
Our WHY extends way beyond anything monetary. If learning relationship skills can mean nearly a third fewer divorces, imagine what making that education accessible to everyone could do for couples, families, and the children who grow up around them. We do believe this genuinely can make the world a better place (yes, we know it sounds like one of those YC pitches that get meme'd, but we truly think that it's possible).
