🌟 Inspiration

LoomaLearn was inspired by a very personal experience. I saw my nephew struggling to keep pace with schoolwork — overwhelmed by large textbook volumes and the inability to focus on topics individually. This reminded me of my own study habits where I would manually separate topics on a makeshift whiteboard from the school res/dorm study wall area around my table.

This method helped me focus, but it was time-consuming and required constant restructuring.

Another pain point I remembered was taking pictures of the chalkboard or classroom notes during lessons, only to lose track of them later while scrolling through the gallery filled with unrelated images. It was frustrating and inefficient.

Seeing this gap made me think: What if there was a platform that could digitally break down textbooks topic-by-topic and offer instant help?

🚀 What It Does

LoomaLearn provides students with a smart, interactive learning platform where they can:

  • Instantly connect via video calls on specific topics using TAVUS AI.
  • Access AI-generated quizzes powered by OpenAI, tailored to each topic for practice and mastery.
  • Enter a 2D gamified world, designed with Tiled, where they explore and learn through interactive objects.
  • Use ElevenLabs voice technology to hear questions read aloud and respond naturally.
  • Compete with friends in battle mode to gamify learning and boost engagement.

🛠️ How We Built It

To bring LoomaLearn to life, we combined multiple innovative tools:

  • Bolt.new helped quickly prototype and generate core app features, speeding up development.
  • Tarus AI was integrated to enable seamless, topic-specific video calls for real-time expert help.
  • OpenAI powered the dynamic quiz question generation, ensuring fresh, personalized content for every user session.
  • The 2D game world was created using Tiled, allowing us to craft an immersive, interactive learning environment.
  • ElevenLabs voice synthesis was added to enhance accessibility by reading questions aloud.

⚠️ Challenges We Ran Into

Building LoomaLearn wasn't without obstacles:

  • Upload or search textbooks and get content broken down into manageable topics.
  • Designing a platform that involves students, teachers, parents, and schools while ensuring privacy and data security.
  • Creating and licensing custom sprites for the game world to avoid copyright issues and ensure monetization.
  • Collecting and extracting content from diverse textbooks, especially beyond the CAPS /NCIS curriculum, to support a broad learner base.
  • Developing a subscription model that is affordable for students yet sustainable for continued content updates and support.
