Inspiration

We were inspired to create Lookout in the midst of a rapidly fluctuating economy. As both college students and now fully fledged adults, budgeting is an ever present aspect of our day to lives. Spurred on by the challenge presented by State Farm and COX, we endeavored to create a project that could help communities like ours around the world save money, and look out for each other at the same time--from college towns to rural markets.

What it does

In the process, this hack has taught us all manner of things when it comes to keeping track of real prices and looking out for real people. We built our project around the people that are meant to use it. With a phone in anyone's hand, one picture is all it takes to connect them to their local network of users, updating prices in real time.

How we built it

Languages like react native form the base, and Google's Gemini Vision operates our Supabase database in real time. In parallel, Expo helps us develop our mobile app for an on the go experience for grocery list making and easy access to uploading price and product data, and Google Maps directs our users to the places that can help them make the most of their money.

Challenges we ran into

It wasn't without its fair share of challenges though. Developing both a web app and mobile app in parallel proved to be a challenge for a small four person group. Nonetheless, version control, conflicting visual themes, and mismatched functionality was no match for our work ethic.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Lookout sports a charming verdant grocer aesthetic with a hand drawn backsplash on both web and mobile. Taking photos and editing the database to match new entries is seamless and user friendly, and creating a profile and a grocery list turned out excellent.

What we learned

During the last 36 hours, as long as we were looking out for each other no inhibition was going to prevent us from creating an amazing product.

Looking to the future

For the future of lookout we're hoping to extend basic functionality to the world stage. More stores, in more countries, with more foods that bring more people together.
