Inspiration
My (Joaquin's) friend kept complaining about her long distance relationship and I wanted to make her something that would help her and her partner, as well as other college students in their situation, feel more connected
What it does
Through a web interface, you can remotely control the robot from your keyboard and stream its video capture to your laptop screen, letting you drive around a robot in your partner's house and interact with them
How we built it
We 3D modeled the robot in SolidWorks, used a Raspberry Pi Zero 2 W as the brain of the robot, 3D printed the robot, soldered the circuit together, and controlled the robot remotely through a laptop.
Challenges we ran into
We broke one of the motors and it delayed us by about 2 hours while we were trying to find a replacement motor. Also, we discovered 3D printing takes an extremely long time, and the robot ended up being bigger than expected, causing the 3D printing to take longer. Also, the SSH for the Raspberry Pi kept crashing, which made it challenging to make progress on the software side.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We got the 3D model done, electrical system together, and got it to move, all in 36 hours.
What we learned
We're never doing this again
What's next for Long-Distance Robot
We want to print the rest of it that we didn't have time to print, which would allow us to make it more customizable and user-friendly.
