Inspiration

Our inspiration for this game comes from a shared passion for visual novels and narrative-driven storytelling. Games like Doki Doki Literature Club influenced our approach to character-focused emotion, while anime such as Cowboy Bebop inspired the space-western aesthetic, tone, and music.

What it does

Lone Star Lovers delivers an exciting, choice-driven romantic experience filled with love, rivalry, mystery, an, of course, space cowboys. Players shape their identity and their relationships as they explore the far reaches of the galaxy.

How we built it

We built the project using Ren’Py, a Python-based visual novel engine. Our team collaborated on writing, art direction, character design, and branching narrative paths, all brought together through Ren’Py’s scripting system.

Challenges we ran into

We faced tight time constraints and creative blocks throughout the development process. There were moments when we felt burned out, unsure of which direction to take next. However, by communicating, regrouping, and supporting each other, we pushed through and brought Lone Star Lovers to life.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We’re proud that we created something complete, playable, and meaningful, even with limited time and ideas we had to set aside. Despite the challenges, we brought our vision to life, and that’s something we’re truly proud of.

What we learned

We learned the importance of time management and pacing ourselves during development. We also gained a deeper appreciation for the challenge of writing and designing something as intricate and emotionally layered as a visual novel.

What's next for Lone Star Lover

We plan to continue developing the game beyond the hackathon. Our goals include refining the story and visuals, expanding character routes, adding new scenes and endings, and creating additional content such as DLC. There’s so much more we want to bring to this universe, and we’re excited to keep building it.
