Inspiration

One of our teammates, Kamali, is the youngest generation from her Torajan Family. She's currently living in Jakarta and feels very distant from the Toraja Culture. She would love to learn more about it, but these days, Indonesian traditions are rarely talked about.

This gave us the idea to create our website, LOKA, to ensure that Indonesian Indonesian cultures will continue to flourish and won't go extinct.

What it does

LOKA answers the question of how we can effectively preserve culture. We provide our users with 3 main features, which are:

  • Share & Connect: Users can share their own cultural stories and connect with others through messaging to deepen the experience.
  • Cultural Cards: Lets the user showcase their cultural identity in a fresh, personal way and help others discover and learn about the user's unique ethnic background.
  • Kalia AI: Our AI that performs both as a chatbot and a search engine that can answer all the user's questions on Indonesian heritage.

How we built it

LOKA was built using Next.js framework, TypeScript, and TailWind. We also integrated OpenAI's API to map relevant keys by using GPT4.1. Kalia, our AI, can access external sources, such as from Instagram and TikTok. This was made by scrapping.

Challenges we ran into

With limited amount of sleep, it was quite challenging for us to be able to be productive for the whole hackathon (30 hours).

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud to say that we have managed to create an MVP that can be accessed publicly.

What we learned

During Garuda Hacks 6.0, we learned that it's not just about the result, but it's also about the journey, the friends, and the memories you make along the way. We met other participants that have similar interests as us and are as passionate as us in developing meaningful solutions through technology.

What's next for LOKA

We hope to achieve 10.000 monthly active users nation-wide, more than 500 ethnic profiles, and more than 5 institutional partnerships. As we progress, we would also add new features, such as AR/VR system.

At the end of the day, culture is more than history — it’s our shared story, and it’s up to all of us to keep it alive. We thank you Garuda Hacks 6.0 for this extraordinary opportunity.
