Inspiration

Goal: Create real world impact with a project that is focused on environmental sustainability. We wanted to put a focus on sustainability and health for local communities.

What it does

Our platform can be used by beginner gardeners or experts learning how to grow produce! The platform allows the user to input journal/dairy entries that are based around the growth of their plants. The user can also ask for AI guidance from AI as reliable as experts in the field. Additionally, we use AI to generate daily tips to help the gardener cultivate effectively, and we provide them with recipes following their grown crops.

How we built it

We built this application on a tech stack consisting of Python and Flask for the backend, with JavaScript and React developing the frontend. We used a multitude of API's, include OpenAI's api and AWS RDS for s3 bucket storage. We first built a very basic react frontend on a local server, we then approached the basis of our backend implementation using flask to store information regarding the crops, such as what stage of growth they are in and what type of crop they are. We then further developed, giving roles to each member and switching around responsibilities once one of us got tired. We were able to work effectively this way and love what we were able to develop in the time allotted.

Challenges we ran into

Adapting to all the different frameworks we decided to implement. As well as using React and tailwind for some of our first times working.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are very proud of how many things we were able to put together, trying to mesh these things together for the first time and doing it effectively was very inspiring.

What we learned

We learned many things! How long we could stay awake, what it felt like to work for 20 hours straight, and how to not argue when we're all sleep deprived. We actually learned so much within this time though. We learned how it is to work actively in a team under a very strict deadline, and also how hard it is to come up with project ideas that are even worth doing (we spent about 6 hours brainstorming). This was most of our first time developing a full stack project from start to finish and we're very grateful for this opportunity. Thank you SparkHacks and John Deere!

What's next for log-A-plant

We would like to scale it upwards, installing new users and logins. We already have a great dataspace implementation, so scaling upwards with users shouldn't be very hard.
