Inspiration
Shortly after beginning dating a vegan I realised how difficult it could be finding awesome food we could both enjoy, although I love awesome vegan food, I was never a big fan of average vegan food. For this reason I decided to build an app to simplify each date night.
What it does
Loco.Life searches for vegetarian, vegan and organic grocery stores based on the user's defined location and search radius.
How I built it
After digging around I quickly realised the Yelp API 2.0 offered exactly what I needed to get the app off of the ground. After making a couple of requests I began linking into their powerful library and visulising the data using the Angular frontend library. I then extended this by integrating the Google Places API.
Challenges I ran into
At the start of the project I had limited knowledge of the Angular.js library, there were a few UI related issues but nothing I couldn't fix. Trying to balance the data vs layout on mobile was tricky and still something I am working on. Overall I had everything I needed within the Yelp API responses, all I had to do was structure it and present it in a solid UI.
Accomplishments that I'm proud of
The speed of the app and the UI
What I learned
A heap of Javascript and Angular.js
What's next for Loco.Life
iOS and Android apps!
