About the Project: LockerGuard

As Linux users and Java developers, we often deal with sensitive files but lack a simple, GUI-based, secure file encryption system. Tools like gpg and openssl are powerful but not beginner-friendly. We wanted to build something easy, fast, and secure โ€” a vault that encrypts files with a click and runs safely on Linux.

Thatโ€™s how LockerGuard was born โ€” a Java-powered file encryption vault with a clean interface and Linux-level file security.

๐Ÿ’ก What We Learned

This project pushed us to deeply explore:

  • Java File I/O and AES-256 encryption algorithms (javax.crypto).
  • JavaFX for designing a sleek and interactive GUI.
  • Linux shell command execution in Java (Runtime.getRuntime().exec()).
  • User-level security & file permission concepts in Linux.
  • How to integrate Java applications with OS-level tasks.

We also improved our understanding of software modularity, cross-platform compatibility, and cryptography basics.

๐Ÿ—๏ธ How We Built It

  1. Encryption Engine: Implemented AES-256 using Java Cryptography Extension (JCE).
    $$ \text{Encrypted_Data} = AES_{256}(File, Secret_Key) $$

  2. JavaFX GUI: Created drag-and-drop file interface, status indicators, and encryption options.

  3. Linux Integration: Used shell commands (chmod, shred, etc.) to improve file handling security.

  4. Modular Structure:

    • Encryptor.java: Handles core cryptographic functions.
    • FileManager.java: Manages file I/O operations.
    • ShellRunner.java: Runs Linux commands.
    • MainApp.java: Launches GUI and event handlers.
  5. Extra Features:

    • Password authentication.
    • File integrity check using SHA-256.
    • Encryption logs with timestamp.

๐Ÿšง Challenges We Faced

  • Getting AES-256 to work on all systems due to Javaโ€™s policy file restrictions.
  • Handling Linux permissions programmatically without sudo.
  • Synchronizing GUI events with long-running background encryption tasks.
  • Creating a balance between security and usability.
  • Ensuring cross-distribution compatibility (Ubuntu, Arch, Fedora, etc.)

๐Ÿง  Future Scope

  • Add cloud sync (e.g., Google Drive API).
  • Use biometric authentication.
  • Implement full-folder encryption and recursive security.
  • Add CLI version for headless Linux servers.

๐Ÿ™Œ Final Words

LockerGuard is not just a project โ€” itโ€™s a real-world solution built on top of what we love: Java + Linux. We built it to protect what matters, with code that empowers users.spiration
