Inspiration
LOCKED IN started with a simple idea: studying from documents can be difficult when students have to organize and process all the information themselves. I wanted to create a tool that would not simply summarize a document, but transform its content into an active learning experience.
What it does
LOCKED IN allows users to upload documents and uses Plasma AI to analyze them. Plasma identifies important information and generates a structured summary, flashcards, and exam questions in the document's original language. It also includes summary audio, a focus mode, and a flashcard review system. Finally, students can test their understanding through an interactive quiz.
How we built it
I built LOCKED IN as a web application using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript for the interface. The AI processing is handled by a C# and ASP.NET backend. Plasma AI connects to the Groq API to analyze documents and generate study materials. I also integrated tools for processing PDF, Word, and PowerPoint files, along with text-to-speech functionality.
Challenges we ran into
One of the biggest challenges was getting the AI to consistently generate useful educational material while keeping everything in the original language of the document. I also had to solve problems involving frontend-backend communication, processing different document formats, and validating quiz answers. Protecting API keys while preparing the project for publication was another important challenge.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
I am especially proud of turning an idea into a functional application that combines AI with multiple study tools. Plasma AI does more than generate a summary: it transforms the same content into different learning formats. I am also proud that the system preserves the original language of the document and can recognize different valid ways of expressing the same answer in the quiz.
What we learned
I learned that building an AI application is much more than connecting an API. You have to control the AI's output, design clear instructions, handle errors, and think carefully about how the AI interacts with the user. I also learned a lot about frontend development, backend development, APIs, document processing, and learning experience design.
What's next for LOCKED IN
The next step for LOCKED IN is to continue improving the learning experience. Future improvements could include smarter answer evaluation, questions that adapt more closely to the content, student progress tracking, and more options for customizing study sessions.
