Inspiration

It took four hours of thinking to come up with this idea. When we were struggling to think of something that would be useful for college students, we decided to try out the Pomodoro method to jot down as many ideas as we could in 25 minutes. We were able to use this time limit to fuel our brains to think of many ideas that would make college life fun and productive. However, we didn't go with any of those ideas because we realized the power of the very technique we used and wanted to provide that technique to other students in a visually aesthetic website that would fuel every student's path to a productive and successful life just like the success we had with just 25 minutes of using the Pomodoro method. Therefore, our project became rooted in the Pomodoro method.

What it does

Our project is a website that helps students make an assignment tracker that is organized in a neat fashion with comforting text that creates a calming and peaceful mindset for students to begin their work after writing down their assignments. Then, they can use the built-in timer on the website to use the Pomodoro technique and work in sprints to boost their productivity. They can choose between different timing options for working and taking breaks. Each option changes the colors on the website to change the visual appeal of the website. Once the student completes their work sprint, the student will be rewarded with the break time of their choice in which they will be given access to an in-built game that will enhance their productivity. The student has the option to end the break early and resume working as well. Once the student finishes an assignment, they will be rewarded with a mini celebration with confetti that will appear on the screen and an uplifting tune to go with their accomplishment. In the end, this website is a one-way stop for students to complete their assignments as well as take productive breaks without even having to leave their seats.

How we built it

Our entire project was built using VSCode, where we wrote the code in the following font end languages: HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. We built the main components of the website such as the buttons, input fields, and timer using HTML. We added details using CSS such as colors, centering, font, and many other features. We used javascript to give our website functionality such as the timing settings for the Pomodoro. Throughout the coding process, we referred to the AI software called Perplexity and BlackBox. These AI tools helped us understand how to incorporate different components and functions into our code.

Challenges we ran into

We had a lot of difficulty figuring out which idea to implement for our project. Another challenge we faced was getting the audio and pop-up to function correctly as they are the primary sources of encouragement of productivity on our website aside from the pleasing appeal.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud of the neat and visually pleasing design of our simple website. It encourages a focused mindset without any distractions with our straightforward design with minimal clutter. The colors we chose for the website also added to this appeal as they generate a calming mood. Furthermore, we are proud of advancing our front-end development skills with the inclusion of a built-in timer that we had to also add the feature of different timing settings. Finally, we are very proud of creating a website that improves upon the Pomodoro technique by giving students a productive break that engages their brains with a fun game instead of giving them the option to get distracted with other forms of taking a break. Furthermore, we have encouraging effects that occur when the student completes an assignment such as an enthusiastic sound effect with a confetti blast effect.

What we learned

Anything is possible when you put your head into it, especially if you are under restraints. We didn't think we could create something as beautiful yet simple as our final project design.

What's next for Lock In

We would like to make our website more personalizable, where users can create an account and keep designing the website to match their personality. We would like to incorporate more games. We would like to add our website as an extension to Canvas to reach more students and help them become their most productive selves while having a healthy mental state.
