Inspiration
The memory palace is an old trick that memory champions still use. But building one by hand takes a long time, so most people never try it. (Add your own reason here, one line.)
What it does
- Take a photo of your room, or use an example room.
- Paste a list of 3 to 12 items to learn, in order.
- AI finds objects in the photo. Each item gets its own stop on one route.
- Each stop gets a short, strange scene to help you remember.
- Lights out: say or type each item. A right answer lights up its stop.
- Retry the misses until every stop is green.
- Everything stays on your device. No sign-up.
How we built it
- Planned with the Devpost Learn Skill Pack: scope → PRD → spec → build checklist.
- React + Vite + TypeScript on Vercel.
- Gemini finds the objects, DeepSeek writes the scenes. Each backs up the other.
- Plain code picks the route and checks every answer. The AI never scores you.
- Voice uses the browser's own speech recognition. Typing always works.
Challenges we ran into
- A fair answer checker: one typo per word is fine, but short words must be exact.
- Scenes kept dropping the real word, until one example in the prompt fixed it.
- Gemini's free quota ran out, so each step falls back to other models.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- It works end to end, live: from a photo to every light on.
- Anyone can try it in one tap, with no photo and no wait.
- 99 unit tests and 29 browser checks.
What we learned
- Planning first made every build step easy to check.
- Let the AI suggest, and let plain code decide.
- Real use finds real bugs. Recording the demo found three voice bugs.
What's next for Loci
- Reminders to walk a palace again: tomorrow, in 3 days, in a week.
- Longer lists across more rooms.
- Move a pin or redo a scene.
- Testing with real students.
