The idea for Locatch actually started from a very ordinary situation. One day, while going to a cafe with friends, we realized we were stuck in the same routine activities. We began wondering how people discover new events, meet new social circles, or simply break out of repetitive habits. Most of the time, we noticed that people either follow venue pages on Instagram for events or meet new people through mutual friends mainly because those options feel more trustworthy and make it easier to build a connection. This led us to a key question: Could we build a platform that aggregates events while also helping people understand each other’s personalities before meeting?
Inspiration & Concept Initially, we considered established personality classification systems like MBTI (INTJ, ENTJ, etc.). However, those usually require long questionnaires and often don’t reflect real life behavior. Instead, we wanted a system based on actual social interaction events people attend and feedback from others they meet.
That’s why we researched the Big Five Personality Traits model and integrated a simplified, interaction-driven version into Locatch. Rather than forcing users to complete long tests, personality traits gradually emerge from:
Events they attend Social interactions Peer feedback and trait selections
This allows people to get a sense of someone’s dominant traits before interacting making social discovery more natural and less superficial.
How We Built It
Technically, Locatch combines several components: Flutter frontend for cross-platform mobile development Supabase backend for authentication, database, and real-time data Firebase for sending notifications to a user Map based event discovery with filtering and clustering also added travel mode for travellers and vanlifers. A personality trait aggregation system tied to user interactions
One feature we’re particularly proud of is Travel Mode. Unlike traditional event apps that only show nearby activities, Locatch can display live events along a user’s travel route, making planning trips and social experiences easier.
What We Learned Through this project we gained experience in: Designing scalable mobile app architecture Real-time backend integration UX design for social discovery apps Personality modeling without intrusive questionnaires Performance optimization for map based interfaces We also learned that balancing technical feasibility with human psychology is one of the biggest challenges in social platforms.
Challenges We Faced
Some of the main challenges included: Defining a meaningful personality classification without lengthy tests Ensuring event data stays relevant and real time Building a map experience that remains performant with many markers Designing trust mechanisms so people feel comfortable meeting others Maintaining UI clarity while integrating many features
Despite these challenges, Locatch evolved into a platform that aims to make social discovery more contextual, personality-aware, and travel-friendly.
