LocalWiki is a platform for local, geographic collaboration. LocalWiki is a new form of local media that makes it easy for people to learn—and share their own unique knowledge—about their local community. Members of the community can create articles about anything they like, draw maps, upload photos, and anyone can edit articles to make them better. Over time, this collaborative resource can become the community's information hub, linking together all kinds of local knowledge, opinions, stories, and other information sources. We originally tested this model in Davis, California, with Davis Wiki (http://daviswiki.org). What began as a lighthearted experiement has become a leading local online destination. More Davisites visit the wiki on a daily basis than read the local papers, and one in seven Davisites contribute to the wiki. Our open-source software provides all the tools to make this kind of collaboration possible.
