Inspiration

Finding something to do nearby shouldn’t mean searching scattered event sites, community groups, and word of mouth. For people in rural areas, even a promising event can be too far away or difficult to reach. LocalLoops brings local plans and neighbor connections into one place.

What it does

People can search by town, state, or ZIP; browse public events and community gatherings; and filter by interests or whether an event is free. They can also start or join communities around shared interests.

Event pages show the event’s date, venue, source, and distance. People can say they plan to attend and use the ride-sharing section to ask for a ride or offer a seat. LocalLoops encourages public pickup points rather than sharing home addresses. Profiles and people discovery use broad regions, and private messages open only after both people accept a connection.

How we built it

We organized the app around three connected experiences: Explore, Community, and Inbox. Explore combines public listings with gatherings hosted on LocalLoops. Community gives neighbors a way to form groups and plan events together. People and Inbox let users decide whether to be discoverable and when to connect.

Location and trust shaped the experience too. People can search with a town or ZIP for an approximate center, while event hosts are told to use a public place. The app also offers multiple language choices and a voice guide.

Challenges and what we learned

“Nearby” means something different when communities are spread out. In one live search for Burns, Oregon, there were no events within 30 or 100 miles. At 250 miles, the only result was a ticketed event 225 miles away. A larger search radius can reveal options, but it doesn’t guarantee a practical plan.

That showed us why rural event discovery needs more than a map: people need to understand the actual trip, find affordable options, and know how they can get there. We’re focused on making sparse results more useful and helping communities create plans of their own.
