Inspiration
Everyone knows LA for its amazing beaches such as Santa Monica Pier or Malibu, but according to locals, the best place for a chill getaway is actually a much less popular and much less crowded Hermosa Beach. Luckily, I had crossed paths with an LA local prior to my trip there, but we wanted to provide this experience to everyone. Hence, the creation of LocalEyes.
What it does
LocalEyes generates an itinerary for you, as a tourist in an unfamiliar location, based on your input destination and preference selections. Using a specific algorithm tailored to highly rated yet less popular locations, our web app serves to provide the tourist with the best experience while also supporting local small businesses.
How we built it
We utilized python to implement and apply our algorithm to google map data. We then designed a web page demo with Figma. Finally, we created our skeleton site utilizing ReactJS for the frontend and express and node for the server hosting which was our point of communication with SerpAPI. Utilizing the response from SerpAPI and our algorithm, we were able to display locations of interest for the user.
Challenges we ran into
We struggled with implementing the site using react, since we were all new to the framework.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We created a skeleton site that was capable of showing what we hoped for from our web app. Our Figma demo is highly detailed, appealing, and straightforward.
What we learned
We learned a lot about server deployment, package management, and API integration.
What's next for LocalEyes
We want to have an account system that integrates Twilio, sending SMS notifications based on their selected itinerary. We also want to use MongoDB to store user information and MS Cloud to host our server. Soon enough, our algorithm will be suggesting highly personalized plans for your travels!
