Inspiration
I saw how disconnected neighborhoods can be, even when people live just a few doors apart. Lost pets, urgent help requests, and local events often go unnoticed. I wanted to create a simple, safe tool that makes it effortless for neighbors to help each other and feel more connected.
What it does
LocalConnect is a mobile-first, location-based platform where neighbors can: Share urgent alerts like lost pets or safety concerns. Post about local events, meetups, and community activities. Request or offer help (groceries, tools, volunteering). It works offline, installs like a native app, and keeps all data local for privacy.
How we built it
Frontend: React 18 with hooks for fast development. UI: Tailwind CSS for responsive, mobile-first design. Data: Firebase/JSON mock backend for quick prototyping. Offline support: Service workers for PWA installation and caching. Demo content: Simulated location-based posts for a realistic presentation.
Challenges we ran into
Building both the UI and core functionality alone. Keeping the scope realistic without losing the βwowβ factor for judges. Implementing offline support and location-based filtering without overcomplicating the code. Designing a mobile interface that works for all ages and tech comfort levels.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Delivered a functional, polished PWA as a solo participant in an online hackathon. Built a safety-focused, offline-ready community platform in under two days. Created a clean, thumb-friendly mobile UI optimized for quick use. Designed with real-world social impact in mind, not just technical novelty.
What we learned
How to prioritize core features over βnice-to-havesβ when time is tight. Practical strategies for designing accessible, mobile-first interfaces. Setting up a React-based PWA with offline support and instant install. The importance of telling a story in both the pitch and the product.
What's next for Untitled
Add real-time GPS-based location filtering. Introduce advanced moderation and trust verification systems. Partner with local groups to seed initial communities. Explore gamification to encourage neighbor engagement.
