Inspiration
Local Wave is inspired by real challenges in the fashion industry—especially those faced by small and emerging brands. In a landscape dominated by mass production and fast fashion, creativity and individuality are often pushed aside. We believe independent brands deserve the tools and connections to bring their unique visions to life.
Our mission is to help these creators thrive by removing the roadblocks that stand in their way—whether it’s navigating minimum order quantities, finding trustworthy manufacturers, or managing communication. Local Wave is more than just a platform; it’s a partner in the journey from concept to collection, empowering brands to grow sustainably and authentically.
What it does
Local Wave is a platform that connects small and emerging fashion brands with trusted clothing manufacturers. We simplify the sourcing process by offering advanced search tools, curated manufacturer profiles, and transparent details like specialties, minimum order quantities, and locations—all in one place. Brands can easily discover and connect with partners that align with their production needs and values, while manufacturers gain visibility and access to a growing network of creative clients.
Local Wave uses AI to enhance the matchmaking process between small brands and manufacturers. By leveraging advanced algorithms, our platform analyzes brand preferences, product requirements, and manufacturer capabilities to deliver highly relevant recommendations. AI-powered search tools also streamline the discovery of manufacturers, improving efficiency and reducing the time spent on manual searches. This ensures that both brands and manufacturers find the best-fit partners faster, fostering stronger and more productive collaborations.
How we built it
We built Local Wave using a combination of modern technologies and tools that allowed us to create a seamless and efficient platform. The frontend is powered by JavaScript and Next.js, a React framework, which enabled us to build a dynamic, responsive user interface with server-side rendering for better performance. For database access, we used Prisma ORM, which simplifies database management and ensures smooth data retrieval and manipulation. NextAuth.js was integrated for user authentication, allowing us to securely manage user sessions and logins. We styled the platform using Tailwind CSS, a utility-first CSS framework, to create a sleek, responsive, and user-friendly design. Additionally, we incorporated AI to enhance our search functionality and improve the matchmaking process between brands and manufacturers.
The backend of Local Wave is API route-based, ensuring modularity and scalability in our full-stack application. The project is configured to function as a modern full-stack web application, seamlessly connecting the front and back ends. Throughout the development process, we also relied on GitHub Copilot for assistance with code suggestions, making our workflow more efficient and helping us overcome coding challenges. This combination of tools and technologies has allowed us to create a robust platform that efficiently connects brands with manufacturers.
Challenges we ran into
Building Local Wave was no easy feat, and we encountered a number of challenges along the way. One of the biggest hurdles was gathering reliable data on manufacturers and ensuring that their information was accurate and up-to-date. Many manufacturers had little to no online presence, so creating a database of profiles required a lot of outreach and manual verification.
One of the most technically challenging aspects of building Local Wave was integrating the Gemini API. The Gemini API is powerful, but it required significant customization to ensure it aligned with our platform’s specific needs. We faced difficulties in connecting the API seamlessly with our existing database structure and ensuring that it could efficiently handle complex search queries. Despite the steep learning curve, we were able to successfully implement Gemini’s AI-driven capabilities to enhance our search functionality and streamline the matchmaking process. This integration now allows us to deliver more precise, relevant recommendations, improving the overall user experience for both sides of the platform.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
At Local Wave, we’re incredibly proud of the progress we've made in building a platform that truly supports small and emerging brands. We’ve also created a user-friendly interface with advanced search and communication tools that simplify the often complex and time-consuming process of sourcing and collaboration. Additionally, the integration of AI has allowed us to deliver smarter, more accurate matches, making the platform more efficient for both brands and manufacturers.
As first-time hackers, we’re incredibly proud of how far we’ve come in such a short time. Despite the steep learning curve, we successfully built a platform that bridges the gap between small brands and manufacturers, tackling real industry challenges. Our ability to integrate AI, design a seamless user interface, and develop a fully functional product in such a time constrained environment is something we’re truly proud of.
What we learned
As first-time hackers, we gained invaluable insights into problem-solving, collaboration, and adaptability. We quickly realized the importance of breaking down complex tasks into manageable steps, whether it was integrating APIs, building a user-friendly interface, or fine-tuning our platform’s search capabilities. We also discovered how crucial communication and teamwork are when working under tight deadlines, as each member brought unique skills to the table. Most importantly, we learned that failure is part of the process—every setback became an opportunity to refine our approach, and the experience has made us more resilient and eager to tackle new challenges in the future. The many hours spent on the project is something we all take to heart!
What's next for Local Wave
In the future, Local Wave is excited to take the next steps in expanding our platform and offerings. We’re working on creating an online marketplace where consumers can discover and purchase products directly from the small brands we support. This will help these brands reach a broader audience and foster a more direct connection with their customers. Additionally, we plan to actively reach out to more manufacturers to expand our network, ensuring that we can provide even more options and specialties for brands to choose from. We’re also focusing on building partnerships with small Instagram-based brands, helping them transition from social media storefronts to fully-fledged businesses by connecting them with trusted manufacturers for production. This will allow us to support more creatives in bringing their unique products to life, while also building a stronger, more sustainable fashion ecosystem.
