Local Ranger Presentation

Helping Intertwinded Conservation Corp. to access more data around wildlife in Costa Rica while also enabling local residents to benefit from communicating information.

What it does

Empowering locals to protect wildlife by submitting bird sightings via simple text messaging.
Our app allows users to interact with an AI powered field assistant simply by sending text messages. The field assistant responds by asking the observer questions about the type of birds or nests they are seeing. It then analyzes the data for accuracy and sends reports to a dashboard that researchers can use to identify patterns and assess the success of campaign efforts.

As users continue to capture and send field reports they advance through the local ranger program earning rewards, additional resources, and vital experience. Ultimately leading towards a full time job as a local ranger.

How we built it

We build this using a wide verity of technology consisting of SMS and telephony API’s, as well as AI and image recognition services.

Challenges we ran into

One of the challenges that we ran into and were mindful of was that not everyone has a smartphone. We intentionally created a chat bot to reach the most amount of people that we could. This also makes it easy on the end user because there is no tricky sign up or download of an app.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are excited about the potential in this project. It is fairly inexpensive to get started, reaches a broad range of people and can help foster new interest in conservation.

What we learned

How to think though low tech solutions while keeping in mind the cost and potential scale of a project.
