Inspiration

Our inspiration came from observing a critical flaw in the current generation of AI writing assistants. While tools like GPT and Gemini are powerful, they require users to send their text to cloud servers for processing. This creates a dangerous trade-off between utility and privacy. For businesses, sending internal strategies or client data to a third party is a major security and compliance risk. For individual users, it means their private emails and personal thoughts are being read and stored, which is a significant violation of privacy. We wanted to build a tool that offers the full power of AI without forcing users to give up control over their data.

What it does

LocalMind is a Chrome extension that functions as a complete AI writing assistant, operating 100% locally on your device. When you select text in your browser, LocalMind provides a suite of tools:

Rephrase: Generates multiple alternative versions of your text to improve style and clarity.

Proofread: Checks for and corrects spelling and grammatical errors.

Translate: Translates text into other languages, such as Spanish, for effective communication.

Analyze: Provides feedback on your writing, highlighting what was done well and offering actionable suggestions for improvement.

A key feature is its personalizability. Users can set custom rules, like "all communication must be formal," to teach the AI their specific writing voice. Since all processing happens on-device, your data is always secure and private.

How we built it

We built LocalMind as a Chrome extension to integrate seamlessly into any website or writing platform a user might be on. The core technology is the new on-device AI built directly into Chrome. We specifically utilized the Gemini Nano model, which allows for sophisticated AI processing to run entirely on the user's machine, not in the cloud. This client-side architecture is fundamental to our promise of absolute privacy, as no data ever needs to be transmitted to an external server.

Challenges we ran into

A major challenge was achieving high performance for complex AI tasks on a local device. Running translation, analysis, and text generation without the power of a cloud server required significant optimization to ensure the user experience was fast and responsive. Another challenge was designing an intuitive user interface that could be easily invoked on any selected text without being intrusive to the user's workflow. Finally, ensuring that the custom personalization rules were consistently and accurately applied across all four of the AI functions was a complex engineering task.

100% Local Processing: We successfully built a feature-rich AI assistant where no user data ever leaves the security of their own computer.

Deep Personalization: The custom "voice" profile allows the AI to adapt to an individual's or a company's specific style, making it a truly personal tool.

Integrated Multi-Tool Functionality: We combined four essential writing tools—rephrase, proofread, translate, and analyze—into a single, easy-to-use extension.

Delivering on "Power Plus Privacy": We have demonstrated that it is possible to provide a state-of-the-art AI experience without compromising on user data security.

What we learned

This project provided us with deep, practical experience in implementing on-device AI models like Gemini Nano. We learned how to work within the performance constraints of a browser environment to deliver a smooth user experience. We also gained valuable skills in building privacy-centric software from the ground up, reinforcing the importance of designing technology that empowers and protects the user simultaneously. This project greatly enhanced our expertise in Chrome extension development and creating intuitive interfaces for complex AI features.
