Inspiration
In many local communities across the Philippines, small vendors still rely heavily on walk-in customers and word-of-mouth to sustain their businesses. Limited digital literacy, high transaction fees, and the complexity of existing e-commerce platforms make it difficult for them to sell online.
I wanted to create a simpler, community-driven marketplace — one that connects buyers and sellers at the barangay level while promoting transparency, trust, and inclusivity.
My inspiration came from visiting public markets and seeing how hardworking local sellers managed everything manually. I envisioned giving them the same digital advantage as larger businesses — a space where they could sell, verify, and manage their products easily through a locally built platform.
What it does
Lokal Market is an all-in-one platform that empowers small businesses and individual sellers to buy and sell products online with ease.
Key Features
Buyer and Seller Portals — Separate dashboards for managing profiles, orders, and transactions.
1% Commission System — A small, transparent fee per sale to support platform sustainability.
KYC Verification — Builds trust by requiring valid business permits or DTI registration.
Location-Based Listings — Products can be filtered by province, city, and barangay.
Chat Support — Enables buyers and sellers to communicate directly for inquiries and negotiations.
Email Notifications — Real-time alerts for registration, approvals, edits, and password resets.
How we built it
I first created Lokal Market in Hostinger, but as I continued developing the project, I realized that the biggest challenge was data integration. When I tested it using Google AI Studio, I discovered that the data was being saved only in the same browser session — it wasn’t syncing across different browsers or devices.
That’s when I understood the importance of using a proper backend database. I decided to integrate Firebase Realtime Database, which allowed me to handle cross-browser data storage and real-time synchronization. Learning how to connect and structure Firebase from scratch became one of my most valuable experiences.
Challenges we ran into
When I see a post on a Social Media Platform I was curious what Google AI Studio is. So I created an account and I see that I can create the app the same as the other platform that I used which I am having trouble with creating. I am not sure it going to work. When I tested it using Google AI Studio, I discovered that the data was being saved only in the same browser session — it wasn’t syncing across different browsers or devices.

Learning how to connect and structure Firebase from scratch became one of my most valuable experiences.
The other challenges is connecting the domain I explored that how it will deploy and I see I can Deploy the APP and take that steps. I can't believe it that the flow is seamless as much as possible for me for the first time user doing this.
Specific Challenges
Cross-browser data sync — Data created in one browser (e.g., Chrome) wasn’t appearing in another (e.g., Edge).
Database structure — Designing a clean, efficient model for users, sellers, orders, commissions, and products.
Integration setup — Learning Firebase configuration and authentication for the first time.
Email notifications — Making sure registration and approval updates triggered correctly through Firebase actions.
UI responsiveness — Optimizing layouts for mobile screens and improving the admin panel’s design.
Connecting Domain on Cloud.
These challenges taught me how to connect Firebase Realtime Database to Google AI Studio environment, manage real-time updates, and ensure data synchronization across all users and devices.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Built a fully functional buyer–seller ecosystem using Google AI Studio for rapid prototyping.
Set up a seamless email notification system for all key user actions, including registration, approvals, edits, and password resets.
Implemented a real-time application approval flow for admins.
Designed a stable 1% commission workflow for every product sold, with a transparent verification process.
Added Barangay-based filters, enabling hyper-local product discovery — a first for local e-commerce platforms.
Integrated chat support, allowing buyers and sellers to communicate directly for inquiries and negotiations.
Defined shipping options — stores can either cover delivery themselves or request Local Market–assisted delivery.
As of now, payments are handled solely by the sellers, while Local Market collects only a 1% commission per product sold.
Developed personalized user profiles and dashboards for managing listings, orders, chat history, and verification status.
What we learned
I learned how to integrate Firebase Realtime Database to handle cross-browser data persistence and synchronization.
I discovered the importance of using a centralized database rather than storing data locally in one browser.
I explored how to use custom PHP hooks and shortcodes to create an efficient admin dashboard.
I understood how to merge community-level trust with digital infrastructure, making the platform both functional and credible.
I realized that building local technology isn’t just about writing code — it’s about empowering small businesses and strengthening communities.
Through this project, I also deepened my understanding of backend logic, email automation, and real-time event handling, ensuring that the platform stays responsive and reliable.
What's next for Lokal Market
The next phase of Lokal Market focuses on growth and automation:
Mobile App Deployment — Launching a PWA and Android version built with Flutter or React Native.
AI-Powered Product Categorization — Using NLP to automatically tag and organize listings.
Blockchain-Based Verification — For transparent business permit and identity validation.
Geo-Fencing and Nearby Discovery — Allowing buyers to find vendors within their immediate barangay or city radius.
Integrated Payment Gateway — Introducing secure in-app payment processing (Stripe, PayMongo, or similar).
Expansion — Bringing Lokal Market to more provinces and regional communities across the Philippines.
