Inspiration

Modern travel often revolves around popular attractions, leaving travelers with generic experiences while many talented local guides, artists, chefs, and hobbyists struggle to reach potential customers. We wanted to bridge this gap by creating a platform that helps travelers discover authentic, community-led experiences while enabling locals to earn by sharing their culture, skills, and stories.

What it does

Local Loop is a marketplace that connects travelers with unique, host-led experiences. Travelers can browse experiences by location and category, view detailed listings, read reviews, and book activities in just a few clicks. Hosts can create and manage their own experiences, track bookings, and monitor their earnings through a dedicated dashboard. The platform delivers a seamless experience for both travelers and hosts while promoting local tourism and supporting small businesses.

How we built it

We built Local Loop as a full-stack web application using Next.js, React, TypeScript, Tailwind CSS, and shadcn/ui for a modern, responsive user interface. The frontend was rapidly prototyped using Vercel v0, allowing us to iterate on polished UI components quickly. Amazon Aurora PostgreSQL serves as the primary database for storing users, experiences, bookings, and reviews, while the backend APIs manage authentication, listings, booking workflows, and user dashboards. The application is deployed on Vercel, providing a fast, scalable, and production-ready experience.

Challenges we ran into

One of the biggest challenges was designing a user experience that worked equally well for travelers and hosts while keeping the interface simple. We also had to model relationships between users, experiences, bookings, and reviews in a way that supports future scalability. Balancing a polished UI with limited hackathon time required prioritizing the most impactful features without sacrificing usability.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We're proud of building a polished marketplace experience that feels like a real consumer product rather than a simple prototype. The application supports complete user journeys for both travelers and hosts, features a clean and intuitive interface, and demonstrates how modern AI-assisted development tools can accelerate product development. Most importantly, we created a solution with clear real-world value and a sustainable business model.

What we learned

This project reinforced the value of rapid prototyping with AI-powered development tools and component-driven design. We learned how to build a scalable marketplace architecture, design intuitive booking workflows, and integrate a cloud-native relational database into a modern web application. We also gained insight into prioritizing features that maximize user value within the constraints of a hackathon.

What's next for Local Loop

Our vision is to transform Local Loop into a comprehensive platform for community-driven tourism. Future enhancements include secure online payments, AI-powered personalized recommendations, interactive maps, real-time messaging between travelers and hosts, multilingual support, host verification, calendar synchronization, and mobile applications for iOS and Android. We also plan to introduce dynamic pricing, loyalty programs, and partnerships with local tourism boards to help communities showcase authentic experiences to a global audience.
