Inspiration
During this global pandemic, it has been difficult to enjoy some of the experiences we were once used to. Having the ability to visit an art gallery with art from a local community is an experience we all took for granted, so we wanted to create a mechanism by which we could enjoy art in a reimagined way.
What it does
The project has two parts: first, a user is guided through a series of preference selections that will narrow their search. Once these fields have been narrowed, they move to the web app in which they are free to explore a personalized art gallery based on their choices.
How we built it
We used the Unity engine for the first part, creating a 3D space in which a character can move around and select their preferences for the questions. The web app is implemented using the Flask microframework in Python and styled using HTML/CSS.
Challenges we ran into
There were quite a few challenges that we ran into with this project. Our vision was extremely clear for the product we wanted, but figuring out the implementation details was tricky. There were a lot of ideas about how we would implement our design, but they all had to compromise on certain features we envisioned in our final product but couldn’t include due to the time constraints of a hackathon.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We were able to use Unity to animate the search Gateway. We used Flask to implement the web app to illustrate the main concepts of the web application. We also looked into SQL Database to implement the basic web app functionalities such as artist signup and user login.
What we learned
As emerging hackers, we were not comfortable with all the technologies we utilized for our project and thus learned a lot. In addition to learning the technologies we directly used, like Unity and Flask, we also had to learn Git in order to collaborate effectively and efficiently.
What's next for Local Lenz
In order to implement our vision of Local Lenz, we will continue to use Unity to implement both the VR search gateway and the VR gallery portals for our web app. We will also enhance the users’ VR viewing experience by using VR lenses such as Oculus, Google Cardboard, MS HoloLens.
