Inspiration
We were driven by the clear disconnect in young voter engagement in recent years, and inspired to make a change in both our communities and beyond.
What it does
Local Lens provides users with up to date, unbiased information on politicians in their area that are either in office or running for office, with the help artificial intelligence.
How we built it
We built Local Lens using React, Next.js, and Firebase. We utilized a geocoding API, a civics information API, and the OpenAI API to provide users with the best possible information.
Challenges we ran into
Some challenges we ran into were initializing our authentication services, and acclimating to new APIs, specifically the OpenAI API. However, we overcame these as a team and are pleased with our final results.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are really proud of integrating artificial intelligence into our project, as it was the biggest challenge that we were faced with.
What we learned
We learned a great deal over course of the last 24 hours! What sticks out the most to us was learning how to implement the OpenAI API, and how to best engage younger people. We researched UI/UX methods and leveraged them to make our website as engaging as possible.
What's next for Local Lens
We hope to expand Local Lens significantly, allowing for users to contact politicians via email. We also want to implement a calendar system to view local events in the future.
