Inspiration

We believe in helping local businesses to be successful. With globalization and big companies taking over most of the market, we thought a little bit of localization would help our local business to expand their business. So we thought what if we start ranking the best foods in a local environment and make that public to anyone. So if people want to try out the best pizza around them, they can do so. And all the data are vetted only if payments were made by customers. That's much better than bot spammed reviews we see everywhere online nowadays.

What it does

The product we built allows any square powered shop owners to authenticate through square and share their data with us. Based on these data, we will rank the most popular foods by category in each region. What to see the best locally ranked thai food/pizza/paste/chinese food? check out our rank.

How we built it

We used react and nextjs for the front end. Postgres as our database. And mostly square APIs to make it the confirmation of orders and getting data possible.

Challenges we ran into

There was a lot of discussions regarding on how to rank the items. Should it ranked by category? say best pizza, best chinese food, best noodles, etc. But given the limited time, we couldn't come up with a more preferable solution. So we took an easy way out by making each item unique. So every item is going to be Unique. So you might multiple top items as pepperoni pizza. But they came from different vendors.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We were able to hammer out this product within 2 weeks time from never used Square APIs to making a product that could potential benefit local businesses. On top of that, all the team members had a full time job.

What we learned

Most new things we learned were square APIs.

What's next for Local Food Rankings

We would like to share it with our local businesses to see if they are interested in getting connected to our app to be ranked for free on our our app.
