Inspiration
Financial literacy and understanding complex loan documents are critical skills that many people lack, leading to poor financial decisions and predatory lending practices. We were inspired by stories of individuals who struggled to understand their mortgage terms, fell victim to hidden fees, or accepted unfavorable interest rates simply because they couldn't navigate the legal jargon. In today's world where AI is transforming how we interact with information, we saw an opportunity to create an accessible tool that democratizes financial knowledge and empowers users to make informed loan decisions.
What it does
LoanLens AI is an intelligent loan document analysis tool that transforms how people interact with complex financial paperwork. Users can paste loan documents, ask questions about terms and conditions, and receive AI-powered analysis that explains:
- Document Analysis: Breaks down complex legalese into plain English
- Financial Calculations: Computes monthly payments, total interest, and amortization schedules
- Risk Assessment: Flags potentially unfavorable terms or predatory lending practices
- Comparison Tools: Helps users compare different loan options and their implications
- Educational Content: Explains APR, interest rates, fees, and other financial concepts
- Real-time Assistance: Provides instant answers to loan-related questions through an intuitive chat interface
The app supports both cloud AI models (like OpenAI) and local models (like Ollama) for flexibility, and includes features like conversation export, streaming responses, and a responsive design that works on any device.
How we built it
The application was built as a modern web application using vanilla JavaScript and popular open-source libraries:

Challenges we ran into
One of the primary challenges was implementing reliable streaming responses from different AI APIs while maintaining a smooth user experience. Each API provider handles streaming differently, requiring careful parsing of SSE (Server-Sent Events) responses and error handling for various network conditions.
Another significant obstacle was creating an intuitive interface that could handle both conversational input and document analysis. We needed to balance the chat experience with the analytical needs of loan document review, which involved designing a flexible input system that could accommodate everything from quick questions to large document excerpts.
Financial accuracy was another challenge - ensuring that calculations and analysis remained precise while maintaining accessibility. We had to carefully craft the AI system prompts to balance detailed financial expertise with clear, actionable explanations.
