🦈 Inspiration Most financial apps are either boring, condescending, or useless unless you're already rich. I wanted to build something for the real ones—the people drowning in high-interest loans, credit card traps, and financial guilt spirals. Loan Shark Tank was born from frustration, sarcasm, and a burning desire to expose the debt system for what it really is: a trap with fine print and a smile. Basically I'm getting bent over by a bank and wanted an outlet for destressing and a fix.
💸 What it does Loan Shark Tank helps users:
Enter loan info (balance, interest rate, payments)
See how long they’ll be in debt (and how much interest they’ll bleed)
Visualize "Minimum Payment Hell"
Get an AI-powered escape plan to pay off faster
Receive motivational roasts, payment reminders, and behavior tracking
Compare timelines: Stay Screwed vs. Fight Back It’s like a fitness app—but for your wallet’s cholesterol levels.
🛠️ How we built it We used:
Bolt.new for rapid UI + logic setup
OpenAI API for financial plan generation and roast generation
JavaScript/TypeScript for frontend customization
Firebase for storing user loans, reminders, and progress
Chart.js for the payoff visualizer
Everything was built to work off one killer prompt, then iteratively refined into a full app experience.
🧱 Challenges we ran into Making financial math funny but accurate
Not terrifying users into financial paralysis
Getting loan payoff logic to match real-world compounding rules
Keeping reminders motivating without turning into an annoying parent
🏆 Accomplishments that we're proud of One-prompt deployment: Users can launch the app in seconds
Emotional design: It’s funny and it hits home
Clear payoff math that doesn't lie or sugarcoat. StuPId Math.
Seamless charting of financial outcomes based on tiny changes in behavior What we learned Lessons here folks: Humor is a weapon against shame—especially financial shame.
Simplicity wins: Users don’t need another budget spreadsheet
Debt feels psychological—our app had to speak emotionally, not just numerically
Most people have no idea how bad their interest really is until it’s visualized
What's next for Loan Shark Tank Mobile version with push alerts (“You just gave your credit card $92 for existing. Congrats?”) - honesty, brutal honesty.
Integration with Plaid to auto-import real loans or others.
Group challenges – “Escape with Friends” mode
Gamified rewards for payment streaks
Dark Mode: Because pain looks better in black.
